I was riding my brothers dog slow 125 yesterday, and some kids on 2T 125cc peds were showing just how lightning quick their bikes were, until we came to a roundabout, and with out even thinking about it, i was riding around the outside of them both, and i never saw them again.

It happens alot, you are flowing through roads, a few bikes together, then you get to a "bend" and all of a sudden the scooterists slow down to walking pace as they wobble around the corner, PATHETIC!!

Why cant they ride corners?!?!!?!?

Have you tried riding a scooter?

Very small wheels makes for rather nervours handling.
They can be made to go around corners fast, but it doesn't feel great.

Also people on scooters are much more likely to be new to biking so less experienced at taking corners faster. And that's not to say all big bikers take corners fast either.

hmm not strictly true yea a bike can lean alot further & better then a ped but when i had pilot sports on my gilera runner i was confident enough to try leaning it & it did lean far without any probs

when i had a go on a m8s aprilia SR i leaned a corner so far & fast once that i scraped the sidestand & that had shit tyres on it

id say its more to do with them being new/learners & maybe they were just SHIT

i like to think i can take a reasonable sized bend without much decrease in speed. as luxy said, its the confidence and experience of the rider in most cases - thats why they are on L plates Wink

I was heading towards a roundabout in the car on monday and saw a youth on a moped tearing into a roundabout ahead of his mates WAAAYY too quick.
Watch this!! watch this!! I screamed to my girlfriend.
The roundabout for him was effectively a hairpin as it was on the seafront and he was attempting it at about 30mph !! Shocked
He was on in the lane to the right of me so I had a side on view.
He started off by swerving to the outside in preparation, leaning forward and sticking his knee out ( Confused )
As he realised how much he had to turn, he sat bolt upright, his foot stuck out speedway style and the ped was hopping all over the place, he must have locked up both wheels and it was trying it's best to spit him off. He was visibly panicking but managed to scrub off enough speed to just stay on.
He the got back into the racing crouch, knee out sideways and continued hoping his mates hadn't seen. Laughing Laughing Laughing
It was fecking hilarious!

I've noticed this, they go very very slowly round corners, often with a foot down on the inside..

I've never ridden a ped of any description so I can't comment.

Scooters are nervous wee buggers with their little wheels and often crappy suspension. All you need is balls of steel...

scooters are fine at speeds of 40 or 50 around bends, but on mine im limited by how far it can lean b4 bits of it scrape the road.

the limited lean angle means that it isnt much good at high speed cornering. at low speed cornering its great though as its so agile because of its small wheels

as mentioned its probably the riders not the scooters which makes them go slow around corners

another factor tho, is the weight distribution. more weight at the back so it can swing out in the wet

that scooter video from taxi is cool

My friends cournered fucking fast on them, They could of probably put there knees down if they had sliders ( but no they had trackies like most chav scoot boi's )

I think its to do with how mental you are and if you give a fuck about coming off and sliding into oncoming traffic.

Its more down to the fact that small hard tyres and shit suspension make for crap high speed cornering. With some grippy tyres such as pilot sports and decent suspension you can take them faster, but pot holes are more noticeable with little wheels.

Pic of a mate (no. 14) at a BSSO round a few years back.

I've out run supermotos on both of my scooters. The piaggio NRG had a soft chassis, but pretty decent suspension, and cornered fairly well, it was funny suprising the boy racers when i stuck with them through any bend.

My speedfight has an overly hard chassis and suspension, but on smooth road, i've had the centre-stand foot peg hitting the ground, and that was absobloodylutely terrifying. Scooters can take corners - and a lot better than most people think. It's just the riders often get ahead of themselves, and those who probably could lean them pretty far often turn their noses up at scooters.

There's pictures on bikepics.com of a journo getting a burgman 400 cranked over so the belly pan decks out. Now that is teh hardcore l33t shizzle!

Came off mine once when I bottomed out the engine casing on a hard left hand bend. It would have made it if I didn't hit a bit of a bump in the road which caused it to catch and do a 180 spin Laughing

Picked it up and carried on my merry way Very Happy

I wouldn't actually mind another scoot, they're funny as fuck when you're with a couple of other pedders all nailing it round twisties. The scoots with 10" wheels are the funniest, if the shocks aren't totally up to scratch the back end bounces up and down on corners. Saw my mate go into a tank slapper on his once Laughing (Kept it upright though!)

its mainly to do with confidence(for me personally), im starting to get my ped through corners faster as im getting more confident at how far over i can lean but i know i could still go faster through some corners but i just dont have the confidence/experience yet to take them flat out

Looking at Dave's photo, not only has hard-lad number 9 just about got his knee down, but he's doing it while changing gear with his right hand.

This is my obligitory "kids these days don't know they're born" post.

You obviously haven't seen my cornering. And, when I do so, I take the inside of the bend to make it even tighter.

im glad i got a bike first as the stability is reassuring, but in town scooters rule as they are so nippy once you are used to their unstable handling

Many moons ago I actually got to try a piaggio ped, and cornered far enough over to dig the center stand into the road and send me rolling down the street at about 40 mph lmao! No harm done, ped a bit scratched. Were it not for the stand it would have carried a decent speed through the bend Embarassed
