share your filter tool woes! to this point i've tried quite a few, and to be honest the most effective was stabbing a screw driver through and turning
i had to change my car oil last week, first time id done it, so i went and bought one of those 3 arm filter wrenches that claims to grip tighter the more force you apply, my god if it wasnt the biggest load of useless shit ever, for 16 quid
after we scraped all the paint off the filter and it wasnt budging, we reverted to the chain type tool, which i dont like either, but after much cursing it got it off, only because it squeezes a dent into the filter thus has something to grip on
the rubber band type ones i have never ever got to grip the filter, as the filter is never perfectly clean and they just slip and slip
im just about to bid on a fitted socket type one, as this can surely be fool proof as long as the fit is the same, the honda car filter looked identical kind of size to the bike one, so assuming they tend to stick to the same kinda size
what does everyone else favour? ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

Screwdriver never let me down yet! I have got a tool for it recently (was only £1) copy of the Sykes Pickavant one, not tried it as yet though.

Genius. Used to have a chain-over-the-top, ratchet thing that was a pain in the arse. This is great. Clamp it on to my filter, then the socket extender fits between the pipes and it's twist and gone.
However, if in doubt, screwdriver + hammer is both effective and mildly satisfying. ____________________ - Yeah, you know the type, loud as a motorbike, wouldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight.

This is what you want mate, It'll take off any filter. I lost mine when I was in London last week, you would think you would be able to buy one of them in a wee place like London wouldn't you? ____________________ Past >>>> Honda NSR 125 >>>> Suzuki GSXR 600 K1 >>>> Suzuki GSXR 600 K4 >>>>Kawasaki Z1000 DAF >>>>Suzuki RMZ 250 >>>> Current >>>> KTM Superduke R 1290 >>>> |

RobB that is almost the exact one that was a complete pile of arse
and not sure about yours either true blue, had some like that, there is no friction not sure what the designers are thinking
tend to only buy OE filters, so a nut on the top would be too much to ask ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

I've got a nifty little tool I bought from halfords for removing oil filters.
Basically looks like this:

Done the job every time, just bites into the side of the filter then twist. |

A screwdriver and hammer do the trick for me, just you have to be careful not to hit the screw thread protruding from the engine.
Despite the filter telling you to torque it to 15 Nm or something when you fit it, with a good smear of new oil on the O-ring, you can just do it up tight enough with your hand. There're no problems getting it off then, and so far (a thousand miles later) it still hasn't leaked any oil that I can see. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

my dad has one with a steel band and a long hand screw. When you turn the hand screw the steel band tightens around the filter.
