PostPosted: 19:38 - 06 Apr 2006    Post subject: Helmet Failures Reply with quote

i have read a few articles recently about helmets failing or falling apart mainly takachi and similar chinese generic lids,so i am getting a bit worried about my fairly cheap Nitro 311.
Does anyone know if this helmet is a chinese type as i have noticed a few other helmets look very similar.
Any replies appreciated
"
Ps should i buy a "better" helmet

Buying a 'better' helmet is down to how well your current one performs. Magazines like RiDE test helmets with a series of tests, one of which is the gruesome metal spike test.

Whilst expensive helmets tend to fare well it can be the case that some of the cheaper helmets also seem to do very well too. I have always went for 'as expensive as I can justify' but plumped for a shoei XR1000 for 200 quid after how they finished in the RiDE test.

After a 50mph highside all the rear vents fell off and it was a bit beaten up but my head was fine. The fact it fit me perfectly helped.

if its a long term thing spend a few more quid, which is normal with everything else.

But I have come off bounced and slid on a nitro 311v and I am still here to tell the tale , so they are good stuff not the best not the worst but will do the job

I simply dont by cheap helmets, I cant see they are worse in anyway apart from the fact that the expensive helmets always seem to have more padding, and not hit your chin on the chin bar.

The Chinese ones tend be cheap & cheerfull polycarbonate (2 halves stuck together !!) whereas the Nitros are fibreglass shells.
I don't think the Nitros would wear the Gold sticker or meet stringent German and EU safety specs if they were a bad helmet.
I certainly feel happy with mine and don't buy into the designer label SHOEI etc are the dogs so they must be worth £400+

Having tried one or two of the "better" big name helmets I didn't think they felt like £300- 400 more, OK they may be slightly lighter and a bit more comfy but not that much difference. At the end of the day they meet the same standards so as long as it's upto the job of saving my bonce you could stick a Tampax label on it Wink

OK maybe not the last bit Very Happy.

Mike

I got a 311V for the daughter and I've got an 800V Aerotech jobbie which J&S were selling off cheap in the new year.

Good write up here https://www.survivalskills.clara.net/nitro_n311v.htm

I had one of those helmets (I think it is the same one, it is a different colour). It wasn't comfortable (idiot salesman and an ignorant purchaser) and the chin vent broke on the first ride, but it saved my life when my head met the ground at 30 mph.

The helmet was ruined afterwards, but it did do it's job even though it only cost £50. Poor quality plastic trim, heavy, but it worked in the crash and it was a darned sight quieter than my current AGV. Confused

Shark lids seem to be going for 50% off everywhere just now. Just got a nice one for £67. A good cheap option if you do get a different one.

basically, check for ECE, ISO, BSI, DOT, TUV or SNELL approval.

there's a lot of rubbish talked about more expensive helmets being safer than cheaper, but as long they meet various standard, they are fine. DOT is sometimes frowned upon tho, as it's a self certificating standard that doesn't require outside aproval.

lots of useful and interetsing info here

I wasn't aware that any helmets were made like that. I was led to believe that all helmets were constructed as a whole piece. Confused

I have a Nitro N200 VX, its comfy and light with a decent paintjob.
Although the salesman at the local Yam dealer tried to convince me that that Nitros were a bit 'scootery' and the gold BS stickers can be bought for 10p each and stuck on at the importers. Bollox I told him, I'm sure trading standards would have something to say about that I'm sure.
Forgot to mention they sell Shark and Shoei Lids.

Hi

Been plenty of polycarbonate helmets. Easily to tell by the moulding line down the middle. Work fine, but cannot be painted and are damaged by petrol.

Really important bit is the padding inside, the shell mainly just protects the padding and spreads the load a bit.

All the best

Keith

Hi

To be honest, not sure. I always assumed it was a mould line, where the 2 halves of the mould joined. I could well be wrong though and it could 2 seperate pieces glued together.

All the best

I think your right, it's probably a moulding line rather than my earlier thought that would be damn dangerous Shocked

Yeah that was what I was going to say. A helmet joint together in two half, regardless of how they joined it, isn't something I'd like to have on. Confused It's definitely the mould line. All lids are made like that, to my knowledge, it's just that the more expensive lids have the line buffed off for a better finish.

I think it's only poly helmets that are injection moulded, the better ones are fibreglass shells so different process with no seam to start with.

I seem to remember reading something about the seam being a weak point though ?

My very first helmet I bought and still have was the AVG TI-Tech, have had it for 2 years! *Touch wood I have never had to use it*

Looks ace and all the reviews are spot on, its costs a fair few quid though £380 when i first got it, proberly pick them up cheaper now.

Top helmet so if you have a few quid to spend i would reccomend one of these anyday. Thumbs Up

I think the only ones you'll find approved for use in the UK (on the roads) are BSI6658 or ECU2205 and the new british stamp..

SNELL are definately not approved for british use..
