 |

Hi,
I'd like to, over time, source some USD forks and better rear shock for my Z750. I've guessed that the parts from a 2004 ZX6R could be a good match to the 2004 Z750. I am aware that some alterations would be needed although I'm not sure what these may be...
I'm a fairly inept mechanic but would seriously like to consider doing this, can someone tell me:
What would be involved (parts needed, man hours etc.)
What could go wrong
Anything else that a skilled person would think of that I haven't!
(also, if you live in the Dorset area and are skilled enough to undertake a project like this - and would like to - please let me know, I'd be happy to pay for your time)
Thanks for the help, I appreciate this is a bit of a big question!
Cheers,
Phil |

Right,
You'll need to check that the headstocks of both bikes are the same size, cos then you can just do a straight yoke swap.
I have heard, for example, that it is possible to transplant an entire Gixxer 1000 front end onto an SV650, but you need to get the Gixxer steering shaft machined, and some spacers for the bearings or something.
What you must keep in mind is that bikes are not like lego, they are not all designed to have mix and match parts!
The rear shock would probably fit without too much of an issue.
Personally, I'd sell the Z750 and get a Z1000 before messing about with USD forks from other bikes.
Plus the ZX636 forks and shock are reputed to be extremely harsh for road riding. Add that to a steel spine frame for which they were not designed, and you may have a recipie for tankslappers, or you could damage the frame in some way.
You really do need to know what you are doing before you start a project like this. A good thing to do would be to find a Z750 forum and see if anyone else has already done it. That will take away the element of guess work.
Personally, I think if you are unsure about doing the work yourself, then you'd be better off selling the Z750 and buying a Z thou. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

(just to prove to myself that the Z1000 does in fact have USD forks! ) ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

Thanks MarJay, that's really helpful stuff!
I think I'll just go down the route of upgrading the suspension with trusted, straight swapping, aftermarket parts.
I'll be getting a Thou next year some time (I've only just bought the Z750), I'm thinking the Tuono, Z1000 or Buell (that's as long as I don't hear that yours has gone kaboom! )
Thanks again!
