What exactly did you fail on whilst doing the emergency stop?

Any minors?

not coming to a stop quick enough although i stopped well before the examiner. never mind ill get it done.it was my 1st test so know the format now. Had 2 minors on observation so would have been alright but the emergency stop was marked as serious so ill have to do better next time. At least i done the u turn properly. Cant wait to get it done though.

How does being on a bike help you not stuff up the emergency stop exactly? Confused

im not saying that would have affected my emergency stop just would have felt more comfortable in general if he was a biker. Only in cwmbran none of the examiners are so ill have to do it again with a car. Doesnt really worry me just as i said would have been more comfortable.

I agree. I spent 4 months only driving a car, and when I got back on a bike 3 months ago, I was simply astonished by how much I could see. It's so easy to take everything in on a bike. My examiner was in a car, and frankly I was happy like that, as I think there's more of a chance they'll miss something. Plus they might have a 'cager' mindset going on, so waiting for ages at traffic lights is something they're not going to be impatient about. I had to wait at a set of lights for 5 minutes on my test, they went from red to green twice, before I could go.

Bad luck on the emergency stop. I was worried I did the same as you, but as it was an E stop on a wet road, I guess I was allowed more braking distance.

Remember, on many bikes maximum braking is when the front suspension bottoms out and the rear wheel is in the air. You don't need to get it anywhere near this to successfully complete an emergency stop on your test.

My examiner was in a car and I preffered it. He told me before we set of not to wait for him, if there was a big enough gap for me to go then go. I spent the whole test trying to loose him Very Happy I also figured he's more likely to miss some mistakes if he's in a car, he's got more mirrors to keep an eye on.

Just use your front brake and go really easy on the back, so long as it looks like you're using the back it should be ok.

Is it a fail if the back goes up?

My instructor told me that if the examiner was on the left hand side then dont touch the rear as he can't see what your right foot is doing. I passed. This was nearly a year ago.

cheers for the advice. The gutting thing is i was doing them perfect in practise think i was a bit nervous of locking. It is a fail if the back goes up because its uncontrolled. Never mind 2nd May here i come.

Ditto!

I was friends with a driving instructor at the time who knew the examiner, and actually said he liked it when he lost bikes as it meant they were riding properly...

I did my best Very Happy

practise your emergency stop a lot. if you do your next test on a bike school bike, turn up ealry for your lessons and ask to practise in the car park

if you are gonna do your test on your own bike, practise on a car park somewhere

i guess that you were being extra cautious not to skid, so u just need to find the right balance between stopping quickly and skidding

i guess u thought u had to stop by the time u reached him, as if he was a child stepping out into the road, but you need to stop as quickly as you can when he says so. In reality on the test, you can stop fairly casually to appear in control. In real world reality, I would stop so quickly id do a stoppy, but thats not what they want.

good luck for next time.

My instructor told me to act like there was my bollock between my foot and right brake, and between the front brake and handlebar, and that I wouldn't want to stamp down on my own bollock would I so do it gently and gradually without applying excessive force and it should be fine.

It was. Very Happy

Said it before, saying it again. This worked for me.

The back wheel goes stupidly light and easy to lock if you hammer on the front brake and let your weight shift forwards. I practiced locking my arms straight as I put on the front brake and as soon as they were I rested my foot on the rear, didn't press and squeezed in the clutch at the last possible second.

Locking my arms out kept my head up (and looking at the examiner) and kept my weight further back on the bike. When I tapped on the rear at the end the back end didn't lock. If you hit a stone or a seam in the tarmac with the rear whilst doing the E-stop then it is enough to lose traction and lock that rear up. I personally couldn't feel whether it was locked or not unless it started to go sideways on me... Wink
Saying the phrase also stopped me leaping straight onto all the brakes as I had done during DAS.

This sounds daft, but here's my technique...

1.Come round corner, get bike into 3rd and keep hands off levers.
2.His hand goes up.
3.Say to self "Lock my arms" whilst squeezing on the front brake, closing the throttle and pushing back on the bars to keep the weight back and arms straight.
4.Once you've said it, your arms will be straight. Move foot across onto rear brake and rest it on it GENTLY.
5.Bring it to a halt without adding pressure onto the rear, keeping your head up and looking at the examiner.
6.When the bike feels like it is fighting the brake, pull in the clutch. Whilst the clutch is out, the engine will keep the rear turning and help to prevent it locking. If the clutch is pulled in too early then the slightest rear brake action will lock it up.
7.Bring her to a stop.
8.Get her to the kerb with lifesavers and checks etc.
9.Out of gear and switch off.
10.Relax.

When practicing on CBT I Went on the front brake, the clutch and managed to open the throttle up more... The bike screamed as it came to a stop with tons of revs. My instructor said, "That little kid will never step out into the road without looking again as you've scared the Sh1t out of him." Smile.

K.
