Well it's me again. With my shitbag ER-5.

Today's plan was to strip the carbs and clean them. Went outside fairly confident and started work. Pulled the tank back to take it off, and felt a cold liquid dribble all over my hand, looked down, and sure enough, petrol was pissing out of the fuel line and all over the floor. On closer inspection, I found a small hole that seemed to have been taped up, not sure when it formed because it's been fine before. Knowing the bike though the previous owner will have bodged it up, as with everything else on the bike Sad Rolling Eyes Anyway it stopped once I took the tank off so I taped it up and thought nothing of it.

Anyway I took the plugs out to have a look, they appeared scorched so I'll have to sort that out, and I took the liberty of dripping some Redex into the holes and plugging them back up. WD40 was applied to the plugs, HT leads and suppressors and they were put back on.

I was too scared to take the carbs off in the end with the fading sunlight, so I took the caps off the top and checked the diaphragms for holes, of which there were none and then reseated the carbs, spraying them liberally with WD40. Also drained the float bowls. Put the airbox back on, this gets easier everytime you do it Wink and coated electrics in WD40 too. Air filter went back in, no problems there and I reached for the petrol tank to put it back on and low and behold, as I tried to slide it on, petrol pissed everywhere again. Crying or Very sad So I drained the tank, which took ages, then I took the fuel pipe off.

I was down but not out.

I noticed that the pipe had the hole quite near the top. Taking my scissors, I cut just above the hole. Seen as cable ties hadnt worked or tape Sad Just been out to reattach the line, thankfully it reaches and doesn't leak. I filled it with about £2's worth of petrol, turned the tap to PRI while choking it and then hit the ignition and praying for it not to set on fire.

It fired. Wahey. But then it was all going well, and it bogged down in revs, and then I could hear two sharp sounds, like when you take the air pump off a tyre and you get the hiss, it did this twice and then I turned it off because it smelt weird, and didn't want to damage it further. It is firing on both cylinders, just wondered what you think is causing this.

Tomorrow I plan to start it up and rev the tits off it till it clears through, is this a good idea?

What could it be!? What can I do!!? Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Cheers for reading and any help appreciated Sad Karma

Just thinking about your 'noise' Some things that I reckon could possibly cause it, not a complete list by any means.

The engine simply slowly going over compression.

A tight exhaust valve.

Ignition timing too advanced or WAY too retarded so there is nowhere for the expanding gas to go when it is ignited. (should be fixed timing though, you could potentially get it a full 180 degrees out but it wouldn't run at all like this. It would certainly make a hissing noise, I know because I did it at the weekend).

Cam timing too far retarded so it is trying to exhaust against a partially closed valve.

Gas leaking from the combustion chamber (like round the edge of knackered sparkplug sealing washers).

Sump pressurising then exhausting due to eg. forgetting to reconnect the crank breather hose to the bottom of the airbox and instead leaving it kinked underneath it?

As for the smell. Would it be like burning redex?

Right to my credit the burning Redex was what I thought, cheers for confirming it Laughing

I connected the breather hose, though it is a touch diagonal but still functional, I think the noise is coming from the cylinder heads maybe igniting too late but I don't remember doing anything that would change the ignition timing. Would the Redex have somehow caused the sneezing/sharp hissing sound? It reminds me of the sound the bike makes when I try and backfire it but just alot sharper. I know it's been running lean or rich because of the scorched plugs.

I will have another look tomorrow, but I admit that I'm not sure what I'm looking for and it's going to be really bad getting that tank off now I've taken about a cm off the fuel line, I need to get another from Halfords so I suppose there's gonna be a walk down there tomorrow Rolling Eyes I have put in bold what I could have possibly altered.

Oh and I don't know what a tappet or a camchain is, all I have touched was the carbs plugs and airbox. Though I accidentally pulled off a line that went from the radiator to the carbs and green stuff went everywhere Confused

Cheers for the reply fella Thumbs Up Karma

have you checked the air filter is connected properly? my CG made a noise like a asthmatic kitten when I tried to start it without the filter on.

Yeah fairly sure it's on properly, though I'll check thoroughly tomorrow again, cheers. Thumbs Up Karma

Could just be that the exhaust was full of a mixture of unburned fuel and redex which went up with a woosh.

I thought so, but would this cause the noise in the cylinder head? And I neglected to mention (sorry) that I repeated the process, fired up nicely and it idled about 3k (Normal for full choke on my bike) and then dies down, sneezes and then I turn it off.

Tomorrow I'll start it again and see if there's any improvement and probably hold the revs up to get it all burnt through.

I noticed that usually when Redex is added into the cylinders people report lots of white smoke coming from the exhaust, strangely none from mine Confused

You mentioned that the fuel line had a small hole in it. Could it the noise be the pressure from the vapours of the fuel being released? Question

Timing is off a tad, could be a tight valve.

How do I solve this?

Mark, the hole is no longer there.

You can't alter the timing, your bike uses an electronic ignition.

Have you ridden the bike yet? Just sounds to me that you heard a funny noise whilst test-running it, and are now wasting time on a forum trying to diagnose the cause of the noise rather than just going out and riding it to see if there is actually anything wrong with the bike.

Well I got to thinking, and I thought seen as I didn't actually put that much petrol in it maybe that's the cause of it. So I stuck it on reserve and it seems fine. Apart from the broken revmeter, the clocks that are falling to pieces and the problem with it running lean.

So thanks for the advice guys, seems I was being myself again on this one (a class A tit) but I still would like to know if Halfords will do lengths of tubing that will be suitable for use with petrol and not degrade under the flow.

Cheers again Embarassed

Yes, but they will probably charge you an arm and a leg for it. Any small autoparts store will sell it. Make sure the inner-diameter(the hole) is the right size though.

But remember that some Kaw's have fuel lines that are bigger at one end than the other.... mine goes from 3/8th to 9/32nds. Dunno WTF they were thinking with that set up..Rolling Eyes

It could have just been the bike was firing on the wd40 for a few seconds if it's gone now.

Hiya

if the hose does prove to be a constant bore, remember that they tend to stretch when you push them over a fitting, and to get a true match you need to cut back to unstretched hose to get a true reflection of its original size.

Yeah I've taken this into account, I'll have to go fetch some tomorrow, when you have to walk three miles to get a piece of hose you really appreciate the bike. Laughing I'll only cut anymore off if the shop has it, I'm sure somewhere will, won't they?

Just a small note for you mate, the engine treatment that redex used to give instructions for basically involved you putting a bit more than a dribble in (I forget how much, maybe a mark on the side or something) and then leaving it to "clean" for 10 mins or so. Then with the plugs out cranking the engine over to expel the redex/varnish/goo mix out the holes.

Glad you back up and running though.

Cheers for that, it doesn't give those instructions anymore but I might do that anyway, was preserving it before but I accidentally kicked the bottle over and lost a fair bit so I'm not too bothered anymore Laughing

Thanks for that Karma
