Well it's me again. With my shitbag ER-5.
Today's plan was to strip the carbs and clean them. Went outside fairly confident and started work. Pulled the tank back to take it off, and felt a cold liquid dribble all over my hand, looked down, and sure enough, petrol was pissing out of the fuel line and all over the floor. On closer inspection, I found a small hole that seemed to have been taped up, not sure when it formed because it's been fine before. Knowing the bike though the previous owner will have bodged it up, as with everything else on the bike Anyway it stopped once I took the tank off so I taped it up and thought nothing of it.
Anyway I took the plugs out to have a look, they appeared scorched so I'll have to sort that out, and I took the liberty of dripping some Redex into the holes and plugging them back up. WD40 was applied to the plugs, HT leads and suppressors and they were put back on.
I was too scared to take the carbs off in the end with the fading sunlight, so I took the caps off the top and checked the diaphragms for holes, of which there were none and then reseated the carbs, spraying them liberally with WD40. Also drained the float bowls. Put the airbox back on, this gets easier everytime you do it and coated electrics in WD40 too. Air filter went back in, no problems there and I reached for the petrol tank to put it back on and low and behold, as I tried to slide it on, petrol pissed everywhere again. So I drained the tank, which took ages, then I took the fuel pipe off.
I was down but not out.
I noticed that the pipe had the hole quite near the top. Taking my scissors, I cut just above the hole. Seen as cable ties hadnt worked or tape Just been out to reattach the line, thankfully it reaches and doesn't leak. I filled it with about £2's worth of petrol, turned the tap to PRI while choking it and then hit the ignition and praying for it not to set on fire.
It fired. Wahey. But then it was all going well, and it bogged down in revs, and then I could hear two sharp sounds, like when you take the air pump off a tyre and you get the hiss, it did this twice and then I turned it off because it smelt weird, and didn't want to damage it further. It is firing on both cylinders, just wondered what you think is causing this.
Tomorrow I plan to start it up and rev the tits off it till it clears through, is this a good idea?
What could it be!? What can I do!!?
Cheers for reading and any help appreciated |

Just thinking about your 'noise' Some things that I reckon could possibly cause it, not a complete list by any means.
The engine simply slowly going over compression.
A tight exhaust valve.
Ignition timing too advanced or WAY too retarded so there is nowhere for the expanding gas to go when it is ignited. (should be fixed timing though, you could potentially get it a full 180 degrees out but it wouldn't run at all like this. It would certainly make a hissing noise, I know because I did it at the weekend).
Cam timing too far retarded so it is trying to exhaust against a partially closed valve.
Gas leaking from the combustion chamber (like round the edge of knackered sparkplug sealing washers).
Sump pressurising then exhausting due to eg. forgetting to reconnect the crank breather hose to the bottom of the airbox and instead leaving it kinked underneath it?
As for the smell. Would it be like burning redex? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

You mentioned that the fuel line had a small hole in it. Could it the noise be the pressure from the vapours of the fuel being released? ____________________ [Rides: Suzuki GSF600sx]

Hiya
if the hose does prove to be a constant bore, remember that they tend to stretch when you push them over a fitting, and to get a true match you need to cut back to unstretched hose to get a true reflection of its original size.
