2001 CG125W - Removing Front Wheel?

I'm not brave enough to remove the back yet, but I want to get the front off so I can have a look at the brake system... (Theyre caked in road salt and crap on the outside, and I want to give it a damn good clean, and also inspect/clean the wheel spokes thoroughly etc)

Is it ok to make a stack of telephone books/whatever under the front of the engine block to keep the bike upright?
Do I need a torque wrench to refit it?
Are there any crush washers/etc that I need to renew if I take the brake system apart?
Can I grease the whole thing up with LM grease?
Is it going to be hard? I've got a workshop manual but I think taking it apart will be pretty much common sense.
Can I use autosol on the metal parts after I've removed all the road shit from them? Or is this too harsh?
Should I take the drum apart while I'm at it?

Just use some house bricks underneath the engine. The bike is nice and light, but you do not need to lift anyway (stick bike on center stand, lean on the back and front lifts into the air).

You do not *need* a torque wrench to refit it, but it would probably be a wise idea. The wheel spindle will be a pretty large thread so you'd have to do it up very tight to strip it - However you can only learn what 'reasonable' force is through experience. The clamp bolts will probably be 6mm so quite possible to strip if you really put some muscle behind your spanner, or if you use a large 3/8ths or even 1/4" drive ratchet.

Grease the wheel spindle so it comes out easily next time you have it off. Grease the brake pivots inside the drum, but don't get any on the shoes or on the surface that they act upon (in the other half of the drum).

The drum seperates into two when you remove the wheel. One half is part of the wheel, the other half sits inside of it but doesn't spin around with the wheel. You should not need to dissasemble it any further. Just clean off all the brake dust with a rag, then grease the pivots.

Hi, I've only got a 3/8 ratchet, but it's on a very short handle, so hopefully I'll be ok Smile

I can't get hold of a torque wrench/can't afford one, so I'll have to do it up by hand, the nut on the back wheel is still secure so it's all good!

Is it just the nut that's spinning or do you need to hold the spindle as well to stop that turning?

The spindle should have a hole the other side so that you can pop a bar through. Phillips screwdriver will do it but you'll need to ask him if you can borrow it Razz

Unscrew the nut a a few turns then tap the nut to push the spindle through. Keep doing that, when you have no thread left. Take off the nut and you should be able to pull the spindle through with the screwdriver.

Note any bits that fall. May be a spacer on the rhs.

Spinning is a good thing, it means it's going to be easy.

Put a screwdriver through the holes at the end of the shaft, get someone to hold that steady (or stop it turning some other way), undo the shaft bolt, then pull the shaft out, easy peasy!

Should be nice and simple on a nice light CG.

Thinking about it, if your fork has pinch bolts at the bottom, you could do these back up, loosen the axle bolt, then undo the pinch bolts and take the axle bolt off. Eliminates the need for the other person.
