 Posted: 14:19 - 24 Apr 2006 Post subject: Nearly punted a biddy, |
 |
|
I left posting this till now justincase the plod came round as I left the 'scene'
I'm filtering past stationary traffic by the Ricoh Arena in coventry, towards red lights, as I'm 5 cars from the front lights go amber,
as I'm 3 cars from front they go green,
as I get to the front I'm accelerating because traffic is moving off,
As I got to the front I see a biddy(60ish), directly in my way, tottering across the road infront of me.... shes in the middle of 5 lanes of traffic! the lights would have been amber when she left the kerb, and green by the 2nd lane, why did she do it?
the traffic which had started to move off has stopped or is rolling slowly having seen biddy.
So I slam the rear brake on (which won't do much anyway) and gradually apply the front hoping to dodge still oblivious biddy.
I get right upto her, she has by this point seen me, has stopped turned ( cartoon stylie) to face me, dropped her bag and started to scream,
I dodge to the left of her, stop a little way on, look back and shes still stood there, the traffic is still where it was,
I sorted my gears out and rode off home... I look in my mirrors and some one in a golf has hooned it off the lights after me, I think cack! unmarked plod car I pull over into left lane (dual carriage way) and he goes straight past,
that put the wind up me more than the biddy.
I'm still slightly concerned that I wasn't bothered or alarmed by the sight of a stupid oblivious woman in the road, or that I could have punted her across an Island, Death by GPZ... would have made such a nasty mess of my yellow jacket
I must have missed her by milimeters. Perhaps now she will think more carefully about waiting for the next red light instead of risking urnning across,
or just mayb right now she is writing to her local PM about the menace of motorcycles on our roads.
*and breath*
plod havent been around my house after me... so When I go out tomorrow I'll probably see one of those boards saying 'incident here any witnessess'

forget about it , worrying won't change a thing and writting to MPs is no longer effective as MPs are too busy with their noses in the trough, be wary if you find your self in the same situation in 50 or so years time as theres NO way I'm going to be frail and old , do what those Chinese martial artists do they are 80ish and are as fit as 18YOs (not british 18 YOs obviously) failing that I'll cyborg myself up and you'll find yourself with a motorcycle heat seeking missile chasing you. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. And yet, you were filtering, coming up to a set of traffic lights with the vision either side of you and of the upcoming pedestrian crossing obscurred and were unable to slow down without giving the woman a heart attack and had to dodge round her?
Methinks you were travelling too bloody quickly, personally. ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP

nope me thinks the brakes on the GPZ be shite, they used to be good but have gone dull, they are not spungy, just unresponsive,
I dont know how I didnt see her sooner, there were no vans, all cars which I could see over,
I was travelling at 35mph,
I was going slower but had sped up as the traffic moved up so as not to get squashed (because car drivers cant use roundabouts they all dive for the same lane)
I could have braked harder on the front, but why should I throw my bike on the floor (again) to avoid hitting someone or thing when I could dodge them mor effectively?
she was about 1.5metres away from the front of the cars that were at the front, I wouldnt have stopped at 10mph in that distance let alone at 35 ____________________ Insta - FemFeral |

So, you know your brakes aren't that great and yet were still riding at 35mph filtering through traffic?
You realise that if this had all been on your hazerd perception theory test you'd have failed and been rebooking your next appointment about now?
I agree that the old lady probably shouldn't have been crossing the road as the lights had changed, but you are aware that once a pedestrian has stepped more than two steps into a road they have right of way... don't you? (Or at least, I think that used to be the case, but it may have changed) So she was probably well within her rights to be on the crossing.
I'm surprised you were filtering at that point at that speed in the first place, especially if you were worried about cars swapping lanes for a roundabout... ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP

Yup, clearly the old woman's fault there.
They walk around at 1/2 a mile an hour, gawping at the ground and expecting the world to watch out for them.
These old people should take responsibility for thier own safety instead of flirting with danger at any given opportunity.
She was probably after a new set of hips on the NHS and jumped out in front of the bike at the last minute. Well avoided ____________________ GSXR600 |

I think that's just unlucky, But if the cars at the front were stationary where the biddy was, and you were 5 cars back, how come you were doing 35mph? Surely you saw the cars weren't moving.

don't know how any of you can say she was filtering too fast, or was poorly unobservant, since you weren't there, and are basing your comments on your interpretation of her written interpretation of her actions.
give the girl a chance.. so often I hear of people having a near miss on here, which may, or may not, have been their fault, and yet there's always umpteen posts telling them they were riding too fast/recklessly/without looking. unless you KNOW what happened, how about some benefit of the doubt rather than condemnation?

Yes, quite, that's all we have to go on. But that's what she's told us happened. If that's what happened then my initial opinion is that she was travelling slightly too quickly for the scenario. She said she was going slower than that before that point.

I'm not condemning her. I completely agree that the daft battleaxe shouldn't have been on the pedestrian corssing at that point in time anyway. (Old people eh? ) And I can alsotake in the comedy value of the granny screaming with her hands in front of her face as she appraoched!
But it still doesn't alter the fact that from the information she has given us it sounds like she was travelling too fast to pull up in time. Whether that's down to the brakes or her speed (or combined?) I don't know. ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP
