Hello there,

Tomorrow i will be going down to look at a 99 blue R6, hopfully if everything is good i shall be the proud owner at last. This is my 1st bike so ask you can guess i'm quite nervous, but i won't go out on the road until i'm comfatable in the carpark. Anything that needs to be asked when buying from a shop?

Hoping to be insured for the Mayday run. Smile

Cheers.

You want to have a good look round, make sure they haven't skimped on anything. This applies less from a dealer as opposed to a private sale, though.

Really, just try and get as much as you can off it. Be prepared to walk away if they're not throwing in some extras. Either get a sizeable chunk off the asking price (10% maybe) and/or get a warranty or an extended warranty. Tell them you want 6 months. If they're already providing that, tell them you want 9 months, or a year. Ask for them to throw in a cover, or a disc lock.

You will get something, if they won't budge somewhere, either it's an amazing bargain or they just don't want your business.

Thanks mate, i'm also the same as you as wondering if it's a good 1st bike, the only way we will know is by actually riding one which is going to be scary & exciting, but at the end of the day i don't want a bike that i'm not happy with.

Hi there

One of the main things to look for on the 99 R6 is the springing out of second gear fault. Basically to test this find a quiet road, put it into second and accelerate hard. If it jumps out of second, walk away.

As others have said, see what kind of deal you can get as their not exactly rare bikes.

yeah the one i rode had this problem. When on a straight it feels like something you could live with, but on a bend it really unsettles the bike and feels dangerous. The one I tried, you didnt even have to push it very hard for it to happen.

Someone on here said it is easily replaces by replacing a return spring or something but the guy selling the r6 said he thought it might be missing a tooth on the gear or something.

Went to look at the 99 R6 & ended up with a 2000 because it was only a few hundred more & was in better condition with less miles also has 2 new tyres.

Not 100% got it yet as hes just got it in so has to do a few checks but i'ts my fav R6 colour so that was lucky, sat on the beast for the 1st time & felt massive down the front end, sounds great too, lighter then i expected. The throttle wasn't as twitchy as i expected which was nice & the seat felt quite comfatable.

Hes going to phone in the next few days & if all goes well it will be mine. Can't wait till i can start riding it as i'm very nervous & excited.

(The pic isn't the actual R6 buts it's the same colour)

Cheers.

Cheers mate, first thing i noticed about the bikes (Probably on most big bikes) was how wide the front is where the handle bars are, doesn't look rideable. But like everything, you get the hang of it.

Bryce when are you going to start looking? Are you buying from a dealer.

Well Iv always really liked bikes but never have done anything about it. It was just last week I decided I was gonna go for it - well depending on what it costs! Went to my local bike training centre to find out what the course will cost, and what kinda bike I can get, then went around to local Suzuki dealer (not neccessarily a Suzy I want) just to see what kinda £££ its gonna cost for leathers, then started getting some insurance quote.

So, basically, I know what its gonna cost and I just need to get my lessons booked - only thing thats holding me back is my mate. His parents aren't keen on him getting a bike (didnt help saying he wanted a superbike!!) and Im not sure if I wanna ride alone as it's gonna be a hobby/weekend/nice day thing for me and Id like company.

Dont think I'll buy a bike until Iv passed my test, although tempted to get one and practise in car parks as I have no experience.

Don't worry you will meet loads of people from this forum as they always go on ride outs.

I had never ridden a geared bike before doing my test, i spent the whole 1st day behind everyone because i couldn't get moving without stalling, but i did pass which i wasn't expecting at the start. Smile

I have RST leathers, 2 piece for £240 brand new.

Just make sure you get you're test out the way.

thanks for the advice.

Im gonna spend a bit on a helmet, and the jacket and trousers were £130 for the set (offer on, normally £120 + £80). Jacket will be handy for scooting across town. And im looking at a one piece for £280 for when I got longer rides.

How much did it cost you to get passed?

My course is £495. Includes CBT, theory, test fee, free use of bike and equiptment, and basically as many lessons needed (within reason)

bryce

edit: what age are you if you dont mind me asking

I was thinking about getting an r6 a few months ago but i read somewhere that you had to be 21+ to ride 600cc or higher bikes. Is that true? because if it isnt im also 19 and it isn't too late for me to get 1.

Hello,

You have to be 21 to ride it full power, but you can be 17 to ride any bike alsong as it's restricted. You will also need to do a restricted test & this allows you to ride anything up to 33bhp i think. So you can just ger a restricter for the R6 & that will be legal.

Chris.
