 |
|
[disclaimer]Okay before I begin let's say that I'm notplaying down victims of crashes in any way, especially given the recent serious crashes of the past few months[/disclaimer]
Okay. So I've been riding for three years, and I'm on my second bike, after five crashes. And my parents are still coming out with "i saw a biker who almost wasn't a biker" and "take it steady" and "cars are big metal boxes" etc etc...
...I mean I'm sure they need to discharge their moral responsibility and respond to the urgent need to tell me to be safe every single time. I don't respond to it, and I don't change my riding style because of it, though it does get aggravating after a bit.
Anyway, my question is: How many of you younger riders are getting to the " " point when your parents tell you about bikers nearly crashing and bikes crashing and asking you to ride safe etc etc etc... I do. ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/nsrandy/96rs250/ My Bike!

Maybe its because you ride like an utter knob?
My parents always tell me to 'be careful' whenever I leave their place on a bike. Its what parents do.
I suggest you get used to it cos it isn't going to change soon. Biking is dangerous, and your parents want to protect you.
If I were you I'd appreciate it, because a lot of people on here I suspect would like to have had both parents around and together when they were a kid or even as a young adult.
You're not going to change it, you're not going to get any sympathy from us, and its not really doing you any harm. Can't you just live with it? ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

Hehe... mine are both happy I got a bike; my dad used to be a biker, and my mum wanted one, but her dad wouldn't let her.
Besides, they know that if the weather conditions are dodgy I'll take my car instead...
In fact, aside from the initial 'you have to be more careful on a bike than in a car' speech from the pair when I got the bike they haven't really said anything about it, it's just my brother that keeps going on... "I used to ride a (1970's 50cc) moped, and the roads aren't safe... (blah blah)", plus the continuous "that shouldn't be making that sound, it shouldn't sound like a lawnmower"... erm... it's a 125cc... it IS a lawnmower, but without the blade!
Basically, people will always warn you about this and that, whether it be your parents or someone else. Not just when your riding your motorbike, but when your driving a car, or even if your on a pushbike!
If it winds you up then ignore them a bit, but remember, 98% of the time they are just trying to help/protect you! |

To be honest, if my kid had had 5 crashes in 3 years i would be worried and would probably discourage the kid to ride or would get them to take their test to improve their riding. My parents always say ride safe and be careful, but they don’t discourage me from riding. ____________________ Rieju MRX 50 Castrol Edition |

yea i had this and got 10x worse when they passed a bike crash but i lived with it.
i found that what was worse was friends doing the "arnt you scared you could die from a bike accident" and know this will be 10x worse when i recover from accident and get another bike
what was really bad was my dad said "i said be careful to you the day you crashed" like it was going to achieve anything and just ended in a arguement, was like a big "i told you so" from my own father ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet |

I've been getting it for years - mates are worse than parents, but it just doesn't bother me.
Dad got back into biking soon after I started when I was 17. He taught me how to ride pre-CBT and I owe him a lot when it came to learning the basics on two-wheels. We're always chatting about other stupid road users, or the occasional near miss here and there but he's never said 'be careful' or anything similar. I know he is concerned even though he wouldn't admit it - after my 1st accident he seemed to be more shook up than me.
Mum's a bit different. She knows bikes are dangerous and when I said I wanted to start biking I think she hoped it was a passing fad when I was about 15. She wouldn't even come into bike shops with me and Dad when out browsing for bikes/gear at 16. She still says the odd 'oh do be careful', but she knows me well enough that it's just become habbit rather than automated concern each time I go out. She doesn't even know my bike's a 900 - she seemed a bit shocked when I first got my NC30 "it's a bit big isn't it, don't go fast....." Bless |

I still get the occasional 'be careful' but it doesn't bother me at all. My dad helps me alot with the bike, but has always said he'd prefer me to be driving a car. It's mostly my dad, even though he's not a biker himself, that has made me a much safer rider.
You're putting your parents through quite a lot by doing something that is potentially very dangerous, you can put up with some of their nagging until you've proven to them that you're reasonably safe.

Both parents were shocked when I got a bike, the usual response being 'why, they are dangerous etc'. Mum freaked a little and wouldn't even talk about my bike and kept on insisting that I ride carefully and my dad was in shock when I said that the bike was a 750 .
Parents just want the best for their kids, when my little son is old enough to be an annoying chav, I wont let him have a bike at 16, he will have to pass his car test first as this is more practical in the long term and if after that he wants a bike, then ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Hi,
It has nothing to do with your age (I can no longer claim to be a younger rider ) My parents still tell me this and when I crashed my car, the first thing they said to me was - so you going to get rid of that bike now .
Just tune it out, it is better when you don't live with them though.
Regards

I appreciate my parents worry and it is touching, but i am irritated by their stance.
They both own motorbikes, and up untill very recently rode them. Now
my dad goes spastic whenever i mention anything about getting a bike and they both vow to not help me in any way to get on two wheels
Especially annoying is the fact my mum originally said i could have the Fazer if i waited to do a DAS rather than just get a restricted bike.
Diligently i waited until 21 (im now 22!) and she has conveniently forgotten all memory of that conversation (and it wasnt a "oh i want your bike when i pass", "ok" type affair, a big long drawn out convo!).
Pisses me off. One rule for them, another for me. Its not like they have had anyone they know die on a bike in the last 20 years either!
I love them, but my parents are arseholes in this respect.

My parents do that all the time, They have commented on my riding as they said they have seen me riding without me knowing, its been %100 good riding all the time ( thats what they saw anyway) so they are a bit at ease. I been riding for 2 years, this is my 2nd bike and they know that im starting to move onto bigger bikes.
My family has had some bad luck with bikes, My dad lost his leg on one, My mum and dad came off a dirt bike when they where kids after the chain snapped and they both got pretty badly hurt ( all healed now ) and they say that 3 of there friends have died on bikes, One was still alive 3 days after the crash with a split open chest and some of his organs came out... aparantly...
They always say go sensible, of course they are, if I did have a nasty accident the first thing there gona say is its there fault. You have to respect your parents and try to put up with this and not roll your eyes back, rember they could of as easily said no your not getting a bike, like most parents would.
My parents said to me I can get a bike, there not going to run my life for me, lifes to short for that, But me dad said if he caught me doing stupid things on it he'll make me eat my rs 125 :O ( oh its a rs 154 now ) |
