Today I set about trying to take my fairings off and and set about putting on the track plastics.

This was going to be done using the sporadic collection of tools lying in a disorganised mess in the garage. Basically I've realised if I'm going to do this properly then I need to sort myself out with a decent(ish) set of tools so I can do work on my bike properly.

But being a bit of a mong when it comes to stuff like this I don't really know what I need. Would THIS be a good starting point?

Anything else I should get as well?

Cheers
Joe

For fairing stuff, you want a half decent set of allen keys.
You'll also want a spark plug socket, a set of screwdrivers, all the basics.

If you've got some spare cash lying around and want to get it all, you can get a lush Teng Tools set off eBay for £300.

Make sure you have a big hammer and an even bigger hammer, they always come in useful for something.

They're not on the website any more, I expect it was cheap because they've stopped selling them. There is a 230 piece set on there for £70, but it would be worth checking it out in-store, it's not professional and I doubt it has all the right tools. Confused

dont touch these with a barge pole you will use them once and they will break, and probley knacker your bolts as well, stick with the professional range

Those Halfords Professional tools arn't bad at all. I have a few Draper expert ratchet spanners and the rathets broken on them, and I have a halfords ratchet spanner and it still works fine.

To me angle grinders are an absolute necessity, along with a pillar drill and a decent hand held (with a range of bits to fit). Of course an allen tool (though you'll tend to find that your bike will only use 2-3 different allen sizes). Oh and i reccomend getting a set of tapping tools. The reason i say drills and angle grinders is that it always happens that there is one or two allen bolts that have completely rounded off...and conventional means just wont work. I say this from experience - my bike is hardly a year old - always garaged, but when it comes to trying to undo some screws or bolts it all goes to buggery. Good luck!

Workshop manual will be quite useful I expect.

For just taking the fairings off you should be fine with just the underseat toolkit, don't think you need anything more than an allen key and a couple of screwdrivers.

You also want a hammer, they're always useful. Thumbs Up

Best advice yet!!! Dont bother with the 10,000 set as it on offer, its a waste of money. When you have been in the trade you realise that and buy just the tools you need. It will save you money for A nice tool cabinet Wink . Sets have about 25% of tools that no one will ever use. Thumbs Up

I'd take Rookies advice and fork out the cash for the 300 quid box, can't go wrong with Teng Tools.

My college has got 9 of the HUGE tool boxes with everything, 8 of them are locked though as the bloody rag heads keep on nicking tools for shits and giggles Rolling Eyes

Suprised no one has mentioned a torque wrench, may need one for fiddling about with wheel nuts etc.
Btw, how can this be cheaper than the one firefox posted? Confused

Definitely torque wrench

also feeler guages, blow lamp, impact driver

Desirable Dremel tool or similar

maybe mole grips as theyre useful for holding things, dont ever undo a good bolt with them though they knacker everything they touch

theres so much stuff you accumulate though, brake bleeding kit, copper grease, vaseline, long reach sockets, valve compressor, ring compressor, etc etc etc
