Derestrict it before you start worrying about making it quicker.
Basic things would be race can, air filter and setting it up on the dyno. ____________________ Go back to bed - You have no rights - "Streetfighters ~ Mainstream motorcycling's crackwhore sister." |

First thing to do is fit an aftermarket exhaust system, or can at least.
To be honest its not really worth spending too much on the engine as you wont really see any major gains.

Don't bother spending loads on it. It's just a 400 and to use my bike as an example, a stock SV which isn't even a sports bike can out accelerate a modded 400 and costs less to! Knew that would shock you as who wants to compare their bikes performance to an SV of all bikes
If you want more performance it's cheaper to get a bike that already has it as stock. Considering you can pick up a 2000 J1 model zx6r for the nice side of £2500 (ask dodsi as he got his for £2200!), and a G model for even lesss, it makes sense to do that then blow the same amount of money to get a few extra horses from something that just doesn't have the torque to keep up with other bigger bikes as soon as overtaking lots of cars comes into the equation |

Give the insurance companies a ring, don't go by online quotes. Typically devide an online quote by 3 to get a realistic figure. You could be surprised
Either way, STICK with the 400 for now. It will teach you a lot about how to get the most from what power you have and that's experience that you shouldn't ignore lightly. If it means going slower for a year then fine. (learn to out-corner them instead ) |

Very unlikely you'll get caught on the derestriction to be fair. Certainly not roadside. I wouldn't worry too much about speed m8, once you derestrict it you'll probably be happy with the performance for a while. Dont take the cornering/power compromise of 400s for granted. They are massively fun bikes to ride next to bigger bikes which sometimes you dont realise 'til later. If I were you I would wait 'til the restrictors came out and then see how I felt about the bike. If you're still craving power then its 'busa time ____________________ Cagiva Mito 125 (sold)

if you did get caught riding a derestricted bike then i would think you would get done for driving without a liscence seeing as thats what youre doing
dont worry about the 400's straight line power, have fun in the corners and they can teach you a hell of a lot! |

I've got a ZXR400 myself. I'd rather keep it standard. I reckon a standard bike is worth more than a modified ZXR for insurance sensitive buyers and newbies. I didn't even look at anything modified when I was buying.
I believe they sound quite crazy with a race can if that takes your fancy.
There's plenty of power to play with and when i need more power and can confidently tell myself I've rung everything out of the 400, then I'll go up to a 600. They're all about the corners. Get yours derestricted first! ____________________ GSXR600 |

The ZXR wins hands down when it comes to looks. I'm bet it feels a lot quicker than the SV too!

Derestrict it! wow I cannot beleive this! a bike is being restricted, I read on here no one does it!
Then you put one race can on it, that will make the sound nice! and let it breath while adding 2 or 4 BHP ____________________ Call me Mr. Blobby |

save the money for head gaskets and cam chains. The kwak cam chain problem still doesn't seem to be gone, i was talkling to a guy outside mmc yesterday and his barely run in 9 month old zxr600 needed the tensioner replacing.

I think when it's buying ZXR's it's all about the looks. I don't care how many nth performance parts have been fitted to the bike, i just think that each ZXR has it's own character. Nearly every other ZXR 4 has a different/non standard paintjob.
There's no point wasting money on your bike unless you want to keep it for long, unfortunately that weren't the case with Jordan's heavily modified example which i say grew on me.
I'd say spend your money on getting your suspension fettled and suited to your style of riding and weight etc as this will reap greater benifits than buying 400 quids worth of tart and tat. These bikes are meant to be thrown around corners and glue to the road, hence utilise its primary assests, set it up properly and you'd notice a big difference. Getting the right tyres for your bike also helps as it's part of the same equation.
Even though i've only got a ZXR250, which matches the handling of the 400 but about 20% down on power, i still maintain that it's a great fun bike and if you treat it right, it'll give you the smiles per hour you want... until you want another bike that is.
I also agree, ZXR's look much better than any SV. Oh, forgot to mention, all ZXR's must have an obligatory numberboard, front and rear! - spend 10 quid on cut vinyl if you want it to look lush ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1
