I have been told i need to check the reed valve on my GPZ1000, can someone tell me where it is and how to check it please.

I'm not familiar with the bike but i'd be very much surprised if a 1L bike was a 2 stroke!

Its not it is a 4stroke. I think they are also called air suction valves but the manua l is very vague as to how to get at them.

the problem i am having is that the petrol is not getting to the spark plugs the carbs are filling up and when i try and fire up the bike it spits the petrol back through the airbox

In the 70s and 80s some american spec bikes used some kind of system of pumping air into the cylinder on the exhaust stroke, to lower emissions. It didn't actually lower emissions of course, it just diluted them. The system used reed valves to control the air getting in and out.

However, I'm pretty sure we didn't have it on many (any?) UK spec bikes, and I would be surprised to see it on a GPZ1000.

But, from having a read over your problem, I suppose that if the reed valves work directly over the combustion chamber (which would be a silly place to put them) then if they were knackered you would have a compression problem, and if they're playing up you could get a mix problem.

Finding them. hmm. Somewhere around the top end. Look for any rubber pipes running into the cylinder head, they would be carrying the air, probably via a charcoal filter.

But, that might not be the problem. Does it have a good set of spark plugs, clean carbs, a healthy battery, a clean air filter, and fresh petrol?

thanks for the reply yes it has all of the above replaced all of them when it would not start.
