I went India for two weeks earlier this year and it's like that from about 7:00am-11:00pm every day, crossing from one side of the street to the next is like playing frogger all over again, except this time it's you that goes splat and not some animated frog.
They are insane when using the horns of their vehicles, it's all you here all day long. Going by the state of many of their vehicles whilst i was over there, i think if your horn works you naturally pass your MoT.
Same for the test, as long as you sound your horn every 10 seconds at every, junction, turning etc i'd say you pass . |

It is very easy to compare traffic etiquette in other countries with that here and conclude that it is bad or dangerous. What we forget, is that every countries traffic has evolved in its own way. Everyone tries to to get to their destination in the fastest and safest way possible. People will automatically adjust to the driving pattrerns and behaviour of others on the road, and a pattern is formed. Accidents happen when someone breaks the pattern.
Having ridden bikes and driven cars in Africa, Asia and the Europe, I will go against popular opinion and say that I felt safest when driving or riding in Asia (not when sitting pillion or a passenger in a car). There is an order to the caos, and once you understand it, it works well. In Europe, you expect other road users to respect the rules: for example right of way or roundabouts etc. In Asian and African countries, this is not the case. If you drive or ride defensively in the extreme, you are safe. Your life is literally in your hands. In Europe, because majority of drivers follow the rules, you get caught out when someone doesn't. An example is the recent thread, where someone rammed into a car that didn't indicate it was turning right.
Regarding the use of horns; Horns are not considered rude in Asian and african countries. They are merely a way of getting animals and pedestrians off the roads, and alerting inattentive road users to your presence.
I am of the opinion that if African or Asian drivers drive in Europe, they should obey the rules to the letter, and if European drivers drive in Asia or Africa, they should adapt to the local system. When you are in rome, do as the romans do. |

That india driving video is like the Zurich advert on telly. "What if the futrure's vehicles need a whole new type of insurance", except that one was slightly less organised...
