As soon as i get back on a bike and able to handle a days riding i will be doing one, im actully shocked looking back how i never did one before but i think i though id never crash etc etc and now my eyes are wider to safer riding Thumbs Up

I will find one near me and think £50 for a day of 2:1 ratio of police rider (of you ride with one policeman) is very fair and think ill learn alot.

So whos done one and any tips for thing to do before going to get full enjoyment and how it was for you Thumbs Up

Yeah, it was good fun.

Have a look around at what they offer in different counties. I live on the border of three, and what they had varied. Some offer a 2:1 or 1:1 riding assessment only, some offer the same type of riding assessment but with some classroom theory and videos thrown in as well. Some are expensive, some cheap and some are free.

I did the Wiltshire course which had some theory and the assessed ride. They happened to have a slot that weekend for me and it was free, which was nice.

Definately recommended.

Yup definately mate Thumbs Up

Opens your eyes to a lot and definately worth it Thumbs Up I ended up clocking over 200miles that day, but would do it again no worries!

Its a long day, and a tiring one, but you will definately appreciate it afterwards!

But i wouldnt worry if your just doing it for the insurance side of it, only a few reduce your premium, and those that do only take a little off.

But its worth it for the experience Thumbs Up

hmmmm Bikesafe!!! If you decide to do it, good on you. You will not be disappointed. did one 2 years ago with Devon and Cornwall Police (free BTW). it was a great introduction to advanced riding and all that entails with road positioning, observation, forward planning. found it was a superb lead-in to signing up for my skills for Life course and subsequent IAM pass. go into it with an open mind and you'll get a great deal out of it. Sort out any pipes and plates before you go as I've heard that previous amnesties might not be happening this year.

Did one last November at The Ace and would definately recommend it. There's a few recent threads on the forum if you do a search, such as this one - https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=81867&highlight=bikesafe

There's a lot of bikers at my workplace and the Met guys at The Ace are keen to come down and do one from the office whenever I can get it organised.

Aside from that, I'm quite keen to do some more training this year and have thought about IAM, Rospa, doing a track day and/ or even trying out motocross. I can see a track day being useful except I haven't got one piece leathers, which I think are mandatory. As for the IAM & Rospa courses, I'm interested in finding out how they compare and whether one is better than the other.

I did the London one last year, which was run out of the Police sports club near Bromley/Addington, just off the M25 near Brands Hatch.

Cost is subsidised (Thank's to Ken Livingstone!) and it is a combination of classroom and 2 observed rides. One instructor to 2 riders and they match you up on similar sized bikes. The first ride is through town and into the country, back for lunch and then another long ride in the country. You take it in turns to lead and are assessed when you stop.

Then it's back to the classroom for a few tips on anti-theft measures and finally they analysed 3 fatal bike crashes (you don't have to do this bit), which really makes you realise how a little tiny thing can have big consequences - as I'm sure you know yourself.

I would strongly recommend it for you. I think it would help ease you back into biking and help your confidence. If you wanted to take further training after that then you are given a bunch of contacts etc.

pm me if you want any more info.

From what I've heard, don't consider bikesafe in anyway as advanced training.
You may get some of the problems with your riding pointed out and may get some tips, by mouth and from following them, but definitely not up to 'proper' advanced training.

A bit too soon for you Andy, probably, but some of us are planning to do it in a few months:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=82774&highlight=bikesafe

I would definitely reccomd getting hold of a copy of Motorcycle Roadcraft: The Police Riders Handbook. Loads of useful stuff in there. While a lot of it you need to do regularly to get it so that it's a bit more instinctive, there's still plenty to take in until you are back on a bike.

Any recognised training you do after you pass your test is advanced training...

I was considering this from the slightly cliquey definition of Advanced training by those that are 'experts' in such fields.

Basically, what I was saying was that it won't get you to the kind of standard that passing one of the main advanced riding tests would do.

I don't know if you can even 'fail' it as such?

It's not a test though, is it? Obviously, it doesn't compare with a ROSPA or IAM grade, but it will improve your skills and get you an insurance discount. Thumbs Up

To be an IAM examiner for 'proper' advanced training you have to either be or have been a police biker Wink

This is the link for the Bikesafe Sussex course.

https://www.bikesafe.co.uk/Bikesafe/sussex.htm

It's done at Broadbridge Heath, which is near Horsham. I was thinking of doing it and asked whether they ran a course nearer to the Brighton area but they said this was the only one they did.

That's my point, I wouldn't want people doing bikesafe and thinking they were the be all and end all of 'advanced' riding.
In the end, all having done it basically means is that you turned up for the day; you may or may not have got something out of it.

I believe it is designed to be more of an 'eye opener' than anything else.

Agreed - which is also why I think it would be good for someone looking to regain confidence after a big crash

I think the bikesafe idea is going to help you andy, will help with confidence etc. I haven't passed my DAS yet (but have my theory on wed then just have to wait for a cancellation for my practical), but as soon as I have passed I am beginning an advanced riding course, leading to an IAM test and then an instructor course as I want to be an instructor in a few years.

Unfortunately we are no where near you (staffs), but the place where I am learning is fantastic and take you from CBT to IAM. TBH I wouldn't have considered an advanced course due to the stereotype of it all, but have been on several lessons as pillion with the instructor and we all have such a crack, its a day out every week as well as learning to become a safer and faster rider at the same time.

I would recommend further training to anyone, great fun and helps to keep us shiny side up Smile

Shite.

Waste of money imo for anybody with even mediocre riding ability.

Going out with a few advanced mates would be much better imo.

I did a bike safe ride and found that the bloke that took us out did not explaine himself very well and we did become more mixed up than any thing. Although It was1979 when I passed my test and it brought back some things I had forgotten.

As an aside, while in the car (or maybe van actually?) I saw what appeared to be a bike safe group.

Single police bike followed by two 'civvy' bikes.
They were all very close to each other in a line around a corner.
Not good for target fixation if one of them was to have to take evasive action or similar.
