CBR 400 RR *update*

I searched but didn't quite find what i was looking for:

Just a few questions about the CBR400RR:

How reliable are they (i currently have an NSR which is bulletproof, my old TZR 50 (brand new) always had stuff wrong with it!)

Are parts going to be expensive because it is an import?

If i were going to look at one (which i might be), is there anything in particular i should be looking for?

Will it do long journeys without going kaput?! (planning on riding to South Wales in the summer, 160 miles)

Are 400's really as bad as everybody makes out?

I have one, as for being reliable, hmm, mines developed an issue where it sometimes refuses to start, oddly only when I do a very short stint, it's looking like a dodgy kill switch, going to remove it and get it running without then see if the problem goes away.

Other than that I haven't had any major issues, tank range is about 200km's before reserve. As for parts I've not had to buy any brand new, always managed to get stuff from a breakers.

They are as reliable as any other Honda. Find a good one, and treat it well, and it will look after you!

iv ragged mine non stop for 7 month, not had any real problems with it,, tank range is about 200km to reserve,, wil sit on the motorway all day at 100mph without a hitch, although if its got a race can on it u mite find its a bit noisy as sits about 7k at 70mph,

Maintain it and it wont let you down. Just make sure theres evidence of it being looked after.

when i was looking at bikes, 400's seemed overpriced for the age and mileage compared to 600's, but some say they are worth the extra for the handling

i never tried one so i dont know about that, but if you can get a newer bike with less mileage for the same money, chances are its gonna be more reliable

having said that , im 30 so insurance wasnt an issue, but it could be if you are younger

a 600 wd be better for long journeys, but a 400 wd be fine as some people go across europe on them with no problems

I have a gullarm (NC29), have owned it for about 6 months. Its done about 26k miles.

I use it everyday, always starts well etc, the only prob was the reg/rec burnt out (a common problem ive heard). Was bout 60 quid for a new one and has been fine since.

Parts are pretty cheap and theres plenty about on ebay etc.

I got a fair deal on mine but they are generally over priced due to the fact they are desirable as quite cheap insurance compared to 600s.

Pretty quick but total lack of torque and you really have to work the gears constantly to get the best out of it. Really fun to ride but crap around town tho.

I regulary do 150miles + and no probs but as already said does have a poor tank range.

Skip the 4, get a 6, probably cost you the less in the long run as you're only gonna want a bigger bike anyways. Get it restricted if that's a requirement, then get used to it that way.

Mine was pretty reliable, in fact the only unreliability I suffered from any of my 400s was standard rectifier related issues. The CBR should be fine for ton up cruising with no problems as long as it's reasonably serviced. Should last as well as, if not better than an NSR.

Parts are readily available from a number of sources, Elliots, Wemoto and David Silvers being the most popular.

The only problem I found with longer journeys was how buzzy and gutless the engine was, coupled with how small the bike is - okay for under 80 miles, but I needed a bit of a stretch after that - and I'm not exactly the tallest of riders.

newer don't mean better for a start they always release bikes in Beta form , and let riders piss about on them and find faults and issue recalls to fix the problems rather than develop the bike fully which'd cost them more R&D.

For less cynical people there is also new revolutionary parts and bits , they are new and revolutionary and not tried out enmasse.

The TL1000R widow maker was supposed to be hot shit , it wasn't there were many flaws tested out on the public.


that said there are bikes I'd avoid like bikes raped by couriers.

400s are great bikes and you can have more fun on these than most big bikes. Most people on the big bikes can only go fast in a straight line they cant do corners makes me laugh my socks off.

If the bike you are looking at is a NC29 be aware that the second gear is a weak point on that model.
