i am thinking of getting a race can if i see one for a good price on ebay

i already have a standard can, and so was thinking of getting a race can for occasional use when i want to be noisy.

recently one has popped up on ebay with removable baffle

it seems a great idea for me if im not wanting to be noisy all the time

https://i10.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/2c/48/54_1_b.JPG

I guess it should be easy to whip the baffle in and out, but how easy ? will it mean undoing bolts and stuff, or is it just pulling it out of the open end of the exhaust and putting it back in the same way ?

with baffle in, will it be more noisy than a stanard can ?

i know a race can will normally make a bike run leaner, will having the baffle in make it the same fuel air mix as a standard can or somewhere between standard and race ?

any other info appreciated

Not meaning to hijack this but...

Can you get points for having a 'loud' exhaust. (If i get any more i'll get banned and the bike im getting only has a race pipe)

My blue flame exhaust is louder than standard with the baffles in, and even better with them out!

I've left the baffles in now though, as we're getting closer to the summer and if I get pulled over, I want to be as legal as possible!

usually the removable baffle is held in place with a small bolt at the end of the can. Undo the bolt and pull the baffle out, 30 second job.
Also yeah you can get 3 points if the police are being arseholes, I think they need the noise test equipment to convict you but dont quote me on that.

i just read that someone with a 'custom' exhaust gets better fuel economy than with a standard one.
do any of you get better fuel economy with race cans ?

a full exhaust system can use pressure waves to enchance gas flow from the exhaust ports, ideally one pulse as the exhaust valve opens to start flow off, and one right as its closing to scavenge the last of the gases. This could make the engine more efficient, however you are just looking at a can, which will offer less restriction, and make your bike slightly leaner. To maintain correct air/fuel you will want to increase fuelling (either by upjetting a carbed bike, or remapping an EFI bike) increasing fuel doesnt really make sense as an economy move to me. TBH i wouldnt worry about it, it will be cool and sound better, need you consider more?

I've got a Scorpion removable baffle exhaust, the baffle got removed 10 seconds after fitting, and hasn't been in since. (The e-mark stays on the can so it looks legit).

It's basically a race-can with a crude bolt in baffle. If you don't rejet, a freer flowing race can may make your bike run a touch lean, causing better fuel consumption, though too lean and your engine will definitely suffer. For what its worth, the engine on my VFR has been running with a race can without rejetting for the last 20,000 miles, now on about 50k, and it's still sweet as a nut. Touch wood Wink

My baffle's held in with a single bolt, which is easily removed or installed in a matter of seconds. BS stamped as well, so even when the baffle is parked up, my exhaust is of course, perfectly road legal...

Note; I can remember a case of someone on hear who's removable baffle exhaust made their bike run about 30hp down with the baffle in.

Probably not the same in all cases.

No you don't get points for an illegal exhaust, rectification and £30 fine.

IIRC you can't get points for a loud exhaust as previously mentioned. £30 fine and a rectification notice. You will then need to go to a MOT centre, get them to sign off that you have now fitted a legal exhuast, which you'll then need to drop into your local plod office.

If your worried about fuelling then drop it into your local dyno centre and for £30ish you'll get to find out exactly whats going on and what to do about it.

Spending money on a race can just for the occasions when you 'feel' like being noisy does sound bizzarre. Personally, I'd prefer to spend £50 on an evening track session and enjoy just riding the thing.

Marjay's triumph.

The other million probably didn't have it checked on a dyno Smile.

I'm sure most are generally ok, but something to be aware of.

Exhaust designers seem to be focussing on road legal power instead of illegal noise plus power now, so this should be changing

Apparently my exhaust produces more power with the baffles in than with them out. Though with the baffles out, its not 30bhp less though, otherwise I'd be left with an R6 with 3bhp!!! Shocked

ive now seen a slightly battered full system for the price of a race can

not sure id be able to fit it myself, and not sure if it will go up as auction ends.

its got a dent on the can which will probably put people off but it will still work fine

nog, i reckon urs may be down on power with the baffle out because it is running lean

i can change fuel maps with a lead to my pc so i shd be ok for that

Hi

The Bandit with the Akrapovic system with the baffle in is noisier than the stock system, and with the baffle out one hell of a lot noisier.

Putting the baffle in lost the bike 7hp on a dyno run (144 without the baffle that day, 137 with the baffle). However bigger effect is that running with the baffle in is flat spots low down as it was set up for the baffle being out.

On the Akrapovic the baffle is held in place with a single small bolt. Quite a few are held in with a circlip instead.

All the best

Keith

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I wonder if someone could clarify the point made about the punishment for having a loud can.

When I bought my new bike it came with Termignoni cans on - clearly marked 'race use only' and clearly very loud. Given that it also came with the standard cans, and that I have an unnatural sense of social responsibility and fear of the police, the standard cans went back on in seconds.

Is it still just a £30 fine if you're stopped with cans specifically marked 'race use only', or can you get points for taking the piss? Obviously there are also insurance issues.

On this subject....

I have Blue Flame can with removable baffle.
I generally use it with the baffle removed, but I have not bought a Powercommander yet (getting in the next month or two) will it cause any long term issues runnig with baffle out and no EFI re-map?

FJR1300 btw

Hi

Possibly. If it is going to cause a problem (probably not that likely, but possible) it would probably be a sudden problem, such as a holed piston.

All the best

Just to confirm that, you can NOT get points for having a loud exhaust on your bike. What can happen though is that the Police can use a sliding scale for fines, first offence is £30, after that, they can fine you up to £1000 for a second offence. God knows where it goes after that.

I was told this when I was pulled for a small plate and loud can a few years back. The copper warned me not to just put the can back on as they would be loking out for me. Whether this would still apply if you changed bikes is another matter.

Cheers

Grim

Might have even been more than 30bhp...

Hold on... 118bhp - 82 bhp = 36bhp. It killed 36bhp from my Daytona 955i. Which is an injected Triumph.

The engine got very coked up from running rich too. I'd avoid it personally. If I want a quiet exhaust I'd stay standard TBH.
