I was wondering if anyone out there could help me. I'm about to fit the roof to my garage this weekend, but am a bit stuck on how i'm going to do it.
I wanted to use these;
https://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?cId=101228&ts=87867&id=59983#
but don't know how well they will bolt to medium density air blocks. I like the look of them because i think they would be a whole lot easier than cutting out the blocks so i can mortar the roof beams in place. Will these and standard wall plugs be fine or do i have to use special plugs seeing as the blocks are medium density.
Thanks

Ask the supplier who sold the hangers.

Just use a standard 2" 10 screw and fix them from the top down wards on to the top coarse of block work, they will hold fine as they are designed so that the hanger part on the top cant close in due to the tight fit of the joist.
In other words when the joist is pushed into the joist hanger they cant go anywhere apart from side to side but this is stopped by either the joist braces you will be putting in or the roofing board attached to each joist on top. ____________________ "Its Better To Burn Out Than Fade Away!!!!!!" I'm no builder but I've done my fair share over the years with various extensions & garages. You could screw them into the block, But, the problem is the top course of blocks (assuming this is a single storey) aren't tied to each other so you could end up with them coming adrift. You need to fix a wall plate along the top of the wall first to tie it all in and then nail the hangers off that or alternatively sit the joists onto the top of the wall plate, squew nail them into position and block in the gaps, covering when finished with a facia, not forgetting to strap inside using wall ties to prevent the roof being lifted off.

Has your building control officer not given you any adivice?
To be perfectly honest, I think you may be wise getting a professional builder to spare an hour of his time to get you on the right track.
There really is a right way and wrong way to do it. Get it wrong and your whole roof will indeed risk being blown off. It needs to be tied into the wall using L-straps running down several courses. Fixing it just to the top row will offer very little stability.
I presume your not fitting any electrics? If you are, it is now a requirement to have the rest of the building's supply checked before any work can commence. In which case you may want to make sure your new garage is being build to the required standard before they come to inspect the wiring, as chances are it will be the same building control officer that checks both aspects.
Building regs are there for a reason, not just to put off potential diy projects
And for what it's worth, 5x50's are the new 2"10's The screw choice of champions. |

A couple of things, i haven't talked to and don't have a building control officer. The building is right at the back of my garden and is so small in relation to my garden that when the council building inspector came for my next door neighbours extension he didn't even bat an eyelid.
As for the roof blowing off, i have doubled up the blocks that are going to be supporting the roof, the double columns are then bolted together every other block, if i go the bracket route like i mentioned in the first post then i'm sure that bolting the joists to the bracket will offer more than enough stability. As well as this there will be 3 large cross joists being mounted to the side walls which again have been doubled up where supporting the joists.
On top of the joists i will be using weather treated plywood, covered in felt and sealant, the joists will have insulation between them and will be covered in plasterboard on the inside.
Theni was going to bolt each corner of the roof to the brickwork which again is doubled up in the corners.
I have seen LOTS of garages put up that have been bodged (sp) a lot more than this one so am not really worried about the roof taking off
As for electrics, my mate is a sparky and is going to be running from the fuse box in the house, the cable will be run through inch thick truncking that is being run 1ft under the garden, this is waterproof and spade proof. I'm sure he will be complying to all regs. |

Brilliant stuff.
I appreciate your comments, to be honest i hadn't put that much thought into the roof and was really searching for the best way of doing it.
I think i'm going to go the way you suggested and use the brackets and mount them under a timber plate. Then using the l-pieces to secure it to the brickwork.
Thanks for your help, i'll no doubt be back on here when i get stuck. |
