Hi all. I am the god-father to my best mates child. I have just found out that you are supposed to bring a gift for the child at the christening. It's not until Sunday so I am OK for time, it's just that I don't have a clue what it is to buy. Anyone got any ideas or, even better, what have you bought?

Thanks in advance.

Traditionally these are silver, especially from a godparent. Silver spoon with her dates etc engraved (traditional godparent gift), photoframe (perhaps one that can be engraved with her name & birthday); set of hairbrush & mirror; rattle; charm bracelet (one where you add a charm for each birthday, get an expandable one so she can wear it as a child and as a teenager).

Other, newer types of present: cash deposit in a savings account for her, to be topped up annually; tree in a local park; her own star in the sky.

I don't like to break tradition but the cash deposit sounds good, depends if he has some sort of savings account for her. If not, then I'll get something silver and get it engraved. Thanks. But I do have a question, a silver spoon seems to be a popular choice, how come?

Old tradition throughout Europe. Poorer people used to give wooden or pewter ones, wealthy ones silver (hence the phrase "to be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth"). The idea was that a child with a spoon would never go hungry, and especially with a silver one, would never know poverty either. Sometimes you get just the one spoon, sometimes one a year until you reach 12 (for each apostle).

I still use mine every day with my breakfast! So I know I was born at 8.30am, weighed 3,730g and was 51cm tall! Very Happy

lol, well thanks for that. I think I'm going to stick with tradition and get a silver spoon. Your nice story won me over.

Trying to be a bit different I bought one of those glass square thingies with some etched lettering inside. My thinking behind it was that it was something the child may appreciate when she was older (rather than a silly silver spoon/mug/stuff that only holds sentimental value to her mother).

Just a thought Very Happy

I got a tankard for my Christening, not entirely sure what metal it is, probably steel. Also a silver #5 coin, commemorative of something royal, and a blue glass apple with christening stuff etched into the bottom.

Sorry for 2nd post on this subject but I've just been reminded of what we bought for our god-daughter.

A silver $ dollar coin - with the year of her birth.

Again, it was something unusual and did fit in with the traditional silver gift theme. From what I remember it was an e-bay purchase as well.

HTH Thumbs Up
