Old tradition throughout Europe. Poorer people used to give wooden or pewter ones, wealthy ones silver (hence the phrase "to be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth"). The idea was that a child with a spoon would never go hungry, and especially with a silver one, would never know poverty either. Sometimes you get just the one spoon, sometimes one a year until you reach 12 (for each apostle).
I still use mine every day with my breakfast! So I know I was born at 8.30am, weighed 3,730g and was 51cm tall! |

My Godson has a savings account set up....
Every birthday, christmas, easter(... etc etc etc) I put 9 pounds 8 into it (that's the weight He was when he was born)
I also got him a silver saint christopher which he wears all the time... He's 9 now ____________________ Funny, I used to hate being spanked as a child!

Trying to be a bit different I bought one of those glass square thingies with some etched lettering inside. My thinking behind it was that it was something the child may appreciate when she was older (rather than a silly silver spoon/mug/stuff that only holds sentimental value to her mother).

Sorry for 2nd post on this subject but I've just been reminded of what we bought for our god-daughter.
A silver $ dollar coin - with the year of her birth.
Again, it was something unusual and did fit in with the traditional silver gift theme. From what I remember it was an e-bay purchase as well.
