Greetings
i was doing 70mph at relatively low RPM earlier and then i heard a rather unhealthy sound. It then began to lose RPM's and the throttle had no response. I quickly got it to the hard shoulder and tried to kick it, one problem, the kick wouldn't budge Mad
i walked it about 4 miles to a service station where i phone my mam and she called a mechanic to come pick the bike and myself up.
from the description i gave him, the mechanic thinks that it may not be worth the money to repair, but we're not sure what has happened to it yet (need to check back with him next week). i'm hoping that its something silly, i love my honda Crying or Very sad
Have any of you people had a similar problems?
if so, was it expensive to repair?

Sounds like the engine seized up. Either it was on it's way out or you didn't have any 2-stroke oil in it. Confused

Loads of people make the repairs themselves, lilldic_mossy for one has just recently repaired his NS125 which had seized up.

Check this out https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=179340#179340

Good luck! Thumbs Up Smile

I'm sure he did, bet he also offered you £50 for the bike Razz

Anyway if it has seized and you rebuild it yourself, depending on what is broken your looking at £100-£150. Not that bad really Smile

nope, didnt get an offer..
all though, he does have a newer Honda NSR125R in his workshop which he doesnt use, if its beyond repair, maybe he will sell the NSR to me Wink
i know that my NS could be sold for spares/repair because everything is in perfect condition, fairings - not a scratch, frame - mint, wheels - perfect..

oh dear another ns gone bang ! Crying or Very sad
My advice is get a haynes manual first and work out what went wrong before stripping it down and even before thinking of selling it.
I had parts off ian(gpz) from his old ns for £60 and rebuilt the top half of the engine, and thanks to ZaphodBeeble he sorted out my loss of spark problem.
The bike seized up at 70 mph, almost kicking me off the thing .
After 10 min's of looking to find out what went wrong, it started back up okay, and i mangaged to ride the bike slowly back home.
Turned out that the piston seized up due to the fact the small end bearing broke up and stuck in the sides between the piston and the cylinder, also screwing every thing right up ! (see the photos on bike pics ,my sig at the bottom)lucky to ride it home Shocked
My bike is running fine and back on the road after a month of work.( working on it during the nights )

If you aint passed your test yet, try doing the bike up, if its going to be cheap and then get a bigger bike after you do your test. (Like me !)

Any probs pm me or if you aint got a manual for it i can talk you through it with mine Thumbs Up

(keep the bike !)
(Or sell me the fairings Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Twisted Evil Twisted Evil )

Richard

lol cheers for the help
i do have the Haynes workshop manual but i only know how to ride bikes, not repair them.
i'm pretty sure its the cylinder.
atleast you were fortunate to ride home, i had to push mine about 4 miles down the A19 to the nearest service station..
i forgot my mobile phone didn't i Embarassed
my derbi senda is advertised for sale but i think i'll have to keep that for a couple of weeks, get the NS sorted, then keep for a while until i've done the test, then sell for a bigger bike.
the bike is at the mechanic now though, cant give it an inspection..
no worries, its in good hands Wink
give him a call next thursday, find out whats wrong, then i'll be ordering some stuff from davidsilverspares.co.uk

Nice one Thumbs Up

Took my ns125r out this morning after sorting out the exhaust and cdi unit, had a nice little blast on it.
About an hour ago i decided to go out again, rolled my bike down a home made ramp down a step as normal,BUT ( Brick Wall ) didnt use the front brake to slow it down. (This was walking the bike not riding it.)
Shocked And smacked the bugger straight into my brick gate piller !- DOH !
Front left hand side of the fairing is now held together by tape !
Evil or Very Mad
Korn is there a muppet of the week award ? Laughing

Oh To add insult to injury, after ramming the bike into the wall and screwing up the front, I took the bike to work this morning,(nice at 6:00 am going into the town Wink ).
Jumped on it to go home at 6:00pm -- completly flat rear tire Shocked
Pumped the bugger back up,still leaking, rode it 2 miles to a petrol station and pumped it back up to 30 psi as it went down a bit.
The last 3 miles were fugging nuts !
Esp going onto the bends Shocked
Last few yards the bike was weaving all over the place, and i was going really slow !

Parked the bike up and the tire is completly flat, looks like the valve has just blown,or somebody has mucked around with it in work Evil or Very Mad
Now to try and get a new inner tube tomorrow !
And sort out my fairings and maybe a change of colour Wink

{NOTE: Dont Ever copy what i did by riding a bike with a flat or dodgy tires,I wished i left the thing in work, and its not worth risking your life like knob end like me ! Thumbs Down }

My Penny Coin Penny Coin 's worth Thumbs Up

I have an NSR125RK, and after my barrel sized (overheated) I had to replace the barrel, piston, rings, and oh-shit clips. The usual really, oh yeah, and gasgets. I knew nothing about an engine before then, but you get through, I didn't even have a manual. Just though that might make you feel better about doing the work. Oh by the way I have a spare barrel and head, only done 2500miles, if your interested. When I repaired mine, it cost around £300 in all (Honda swizz you something rotten). I would offer you the piston and rings to match, but I snapped the piston in half trying to unscrew a nut off the crank shaft! Rolling Eyes

ouch, i'm sure with some time and effort i could do the work myself.
i'll keep that offer in mind, thanks Smile
i was just checking out david silver's website.
barrel and piston - £99
base and head gasket - £12.50
piston rings - £22
the mechanics labour - somewhere around £100 to £150 depending on extent of damage.
it's going to cost a good £250 to get back to working order.
i'm doubting that it'll be worth it because i only paid £650 for the bike about a month ago Sad

how much did you pay for your bike, mossy?
Diehard, i noticed that you live very close, where about exactly?

Paid £250 for mine, with no mot or tax.
Spent a month fixing it up ,eg fork seals, front tire, rusty frame, exhaust, electrics, ripped seat, dodgy fairings etc..
In all i must have spent another £100-£150 fixing it up ,thats not including the extra £100 when the piston seized.

At the time i was looking at a very nice mito for sale at £1800, but my brother talked me around and said to get a "Cheapy to learn on".
Glad he did, after me ramming it into the wall ! Wink

Ps. Tire is fixed ! and i've sprayed it gloss black Eh? (not the tire, but the wheel muppet ! ,gotta do the front soon !

good man, i'd hate being without a bike!

but £250, damn thats cheap!
mines got 12 months tax and mot at the moment, so thats one of the reasons why he sold it at £650.

I'm pretty sure i know why it gone bang.
It turns out that he replaced the piston rings a few days before i bought it and they hadn't been ran in (you know where this is going) and me being the idiot that i am, didn't know this..
so while i've been thrashing the guts out of it, the cylinder has slowly began to eat itself Razz

I'm definitely getting it repaired, no matter how much it costs

Man I hate my local dealers, have ya eyes out, and their never open. Anyway I think the worst part about when I did it was when I had to spend 500+ miles running it in. I got overtaken by a scooter! Evil or Very Mad But at least you know you are gonna make it last. As for where I live, it's a secret... Actually it's near Darlington, Co Durham Very Happy .

aah you live real close, i'm in Middlesbrough.
I know, i wont be looking forward to the running in process either. You never know, i might get off lightly and just need to replace the rings Razz
I'll just ride to college the long way (the way i've been going on my Derbi 50) for a couple of weeks once its repaired. That way i'll clock the miles up no problem and without putting stress on the engine. Only 30mph roads all the way there.

Bout time someone lived near me! A lad around the corner from me has a Derby 50, and it's forever broken, I asked if he wanted me to put another engine in it, since I know this great web site that has people selling parts cheaper than breakers would Very Happy . He's thinking about it. If you get stuck with the engine, give me a shout, I've had mine apart too many times to mention now, so I might be able to help.

its irritating because none of my mates have or like bikes. there is one but he only has motocrossers. otherwise its just me and my dad, which may sound a bit sad but atleast i get to ride his yam fzr!
but my derbi has been a sound bike, even after putting a metrakit exhaust on without adjusting anything (it even makes better use of the carb now and no longer cuts out when idle)
how old are you diehard?

whats up with 5th, mossy? Confused
