Just leave it. Happens to me sometimes when I sleep heavily on one side.

Completely deaf, as in if you rub your finger over and tap your ear, you cant hear anything?

If so, then I imagine that's gotta be fairly serious, and worth seeking proper advice over?

There's a possibility you may have a blockage down a little pipe connecting your ear to your nose/throat, the last thing you want to do is be shoving Otex etc down as this will probably make it worse('boots' told me this when I had a similar issue), water will just get stuck at the blockage etc.. it may be one of those things that will clear over time, consult your GP as it's unlikely anything can be done very soon, unless you:

block up the other ear(stick finger in it or something)
then pinch your nose, take a deep breath, then then close your mouth and gently start blowing as if exhaling through your nose, but keeping it pinched tight, this should force the pressure into the ear you are semi deaf in causing it to somewhat 'pop' and get some hearing back, although it will be very weird/different at first and may take some getting used to but may clear it up but if it don't work, I only advised you to try it, I didn't force you to do it Wink Mr. Green

The specialist said he can not be sure, it was either an ear infection or the grommets operation that I had as a kid. I'll never know.

Join the club!

I've been like it since birth - have a perforated ear drum on that side too!

It happened to me when I was at university. It was an excess of wax in that case.

My doctor suggested heating up some olive oil so its warm then using an eye dropper to drop it into my ear, this would melt the wax.

If it isn't that then you definately need to go to casualty or see a doctor!

Have one ear done is weird, esp if its really sore already...
Have the both done and try walking straight away Thumbs Up Very Happy
I did that and ended up almost falling over every time !....... screws up your balance something wicked.

I used ear drops for about a week before seeing the doctor,as it gives time for any wax to soften up a bit.
Go see a doctor !

I had a similar thing about twelve years ago. I was cycling to uni every day and kept getting dirty water in my ears which caused an infection, and the left ear completely sealed up with wax and blood.
I booked myself in to get my ears syringed but got sick of waiting after a couple of months, so I eventually shifted it with some otex. I squeezed some in my ear and leaned my head to one side to let it get right down. When it stopped fizzing, I chucked in more otex and after about 45 minutes of that my ear popped and I was able to pour all the muck out.
It specifically advises against doing that on the packaging, but I haven't noticed any long term damage.

Im training to be a Audiologist, going to go into the NHS when i finish so know a fair bit about ears

Do the olive oil thing, about 3 or 4 drops before u go to bed at night, if that doesn't clear it, go to see ure GP and ask for a referal to the aural toilet clinc, or some GP's will clean it themselves

Failing that, it could be something more serious but ure GP will pass you in the right direction

A note also, 3 or 4 times is fine to do the 'blow air through the ears trick' but its very risky as can cause your ear drum to perferate if you do it too hard or to often, just a word of warning

Sorry for the thread hijack but plugger, what they doing about your neuroma?

The last time I went to the GP was when I had an infection in my bad ear, he said he'd send me to the ENT people and that it would take 6 weeks for an appointment................kinda true

6 months later I get a card saying to call them up to arrange my appointment which would be 6 weeks after receiving the card!! Oddly enough though, after the 6 months the infection had long healed!

It sounds like you have wax in your ear....a very common complaint and one which is quite unpleasant.

As said, put some warn olive oil in your ears twice a day. Tilt your head, pour the oil in (just a little) and keep your head tilted for a minute to give it time to break down the wax. Then tilt the other way to empty the ear.

You'll want to do this for about a week before going to see your doctor who will then syringe the rest out. Before, you could just turn up and they would syringe it there and then but now they only do it once you've been treating the blockage first to soften it (as syringing on rare occassions can cause damage, if the wax is too hard).

Of course there is the obvious thing that you have an ear infection.
