Well the time has come.

After 2 years at 33bhp (my own choice I never did DAS Crying or Very sad).

The restrictors are coming out today on the ER and were taken out on the Z yesterday (I've not picked it up yet).

What should I expect? I would think on the ER there shouldn't be much difference.

But the Z?

One thing I am worried about, is being more careful with all the extra power. Coming out of a corner and giving it some on a 33bhp , i've never had a problem, but on a 100+bhp bike?

Where should I be more careful, what shouldn't I do. Question

Any help appreciated.

I remember when I was switching regularly between a 125cc with about 11bhp, and a Bandit.

I found it tricky at first, I'd get on the Bandit and forget how different it felt and how it reacted differently to surfaces and what not. Same visa-versa. Eventually though I got the nack of just not expecting anything and riding as it comes.

Just treat it all as a gradual process. Take it smoothly and progressively. It can be tough sometimes on a bike with anything over 80bhp to pin it and get all over excited with the adrenaline and what not but as long as it doesn't overwhelm you I am sure you'll be alright.

I don't intend to sound patronising as if you haven't ridden a bike before, but some people say 'take it easy at first'. Yeah, do. Take it easy afterwards as well, I've done some stupid things on bikes when I'd gotten out of the 'oh new bike' routine and something or other has bitten me in the ass, don't want it happening to others without warning. You'll get used to it in no time, then it will get boring Very Happy
Just take it easy with the throttle, the bike will be easier to ride than restricted.

You know how the engine sounds and the bike works so 'cruising' shouldn't be all that different as you're using the lower part of the rev range. Just be aware that when you are used to it running out of steam and changing up, it'll suddenly start making power which initially will make your vision blur.

I've never had a bike derestricted before but I reckon the best bet would be to pootle along to a long, quiet, straight bit, get it into third gear and open the throttle. Leave it there until it's up at the redline. Have a glance at the speedo before you decide to give it another gear when you get up there.

You will now know what it'll do ( in 3rd, a fair bit over the speed limit among other things), ride accordingly. I say third because it isn't going to do anything unexpected other than warp-speed as it hits the power in third, there's a risk of wheelieage in first and second.

Let us know how you got on. Thumbs Up

Hi,

I rode a restricted ER5 for a year before having it de-restricted.

It only made a difference at the top end really, you probably wouldnt even notice if you kept it under 5/6k revs.

Revving all the way to the top it made a big difference so just roll it on gradually the first few times you have an open stretch of road.

Fuel consumption went down a bit too, but nothing to write home about.

Hope this helps,

Vince

Remember that things will be coming towards you much quicker and sooner than before so just leave yourself a bit more of a margin for braking.

Other than that get out there and rag it Thumbs Up

I am swapping between a Thundercat and a CBR125 at the moment, when I jump onto the cat it just feels numb at slow speed compared to the CBR which is far more manuverable and light. but then the power differance means the thundercat has a faster top speed in 1st gear than the CBR does in 6th.

Doesnt stop the CBR being fun in a weird sort of a way though.

You will notice a LOVELY increase in power, did you keep that horrible throttle thingymajiggy in all this time? Shocked unsafe- the only word for it.

Just don't go mad and all will be good, ease the power rather than pinning the throttle everywhere and you'l be used to it in no time at all.

You will notice the power band is around 6krpm and once you get past that and up it becomes a totally different bike but be assured the grin will be stuck on your face all night Wink

Watch what you're doing because 80mph comes up a lot faster than you realise Laughing

Tell us how it goes Thumbs Up

Acceleration isn't the same as the restrictor is throttle controlled.
Just don't go whacking it open................unless of course you know you are and are planning to wheelie it Twisted Evil

Yes I did. It'll be on sale tomorrow!!! Anyone want Z750/s or ER5 restrictors?

Thanks for all the advice everyone, my restrictor removal has tied in with my 1st service on the Z and also its 1000 mile run in point.

I don't think I could restrict the Z after having it at full power. Although one thing I did notice coming off the RS (which was about 30bhp) is that you can pin the throttle coming out of corners... don't try it on the Z, it took me a while to stop the back wheel stepping out on me a few times Shocked

Enjoy Cool

Well its been a fun day, the ER5 was quite a bit better, especially above the 6K range, which was okay.

The Z on the other hand was great. I had another 50 miles to do at under 6K (1000 mile break in) & then I was off, the excelleration is blistering especially the pull in high gears. I did about 150 miles on A roads and motorway.

The power delivery was great and for cruising I could just do everything in 6th. But the take up from motorway speeds was awesome. But you could easily break the limit and not realise it.

I'm going to have to get it on a track or over to Hamburg to test it out properly.
