 |
|
Seeing as there has been a recent spout of air rifle threads i thought i would ask a question thats been bothering me for a few months.
I want an air rifle mainly because im joining the army soon and wish to become a sniper so practice is going to be incredibly helpful. I have been to the AFCO's in Reading, Oxford and many other places so i know how difficult it may become.
My parents wont let me have an air rifle unless i join a rifle club, being young i don't really know of any and Google only brings up a university club in the area...
does anyone know of any in the south east or any at all?
Cheers,

The yellow pages did not bring any real results a few but they are a bit too far out of the way.
I shot off a couple of emails to some clubs to see if they knew of any in the area so should get a few replies.
so .22 25 yard range is a priority for me i guess. my back garden is 100ft but it is sloping downhill think i could practice there?

They had a decent range next to the old drill hall round these parts.
It was always manned by a load of guys who knew what they were talking about and would help out the new kids when they came in. Wouldn't stand for any crap or messing about and just generally taught how to respect firearms and deal with them properly.
They knocked the drill hall down when the local college said they would provide all new facilities for basketball, football etc and they built apartments on the old site.
The head of the college then decided that he didn't like guns of any sort and that there would be no replacement range on the campus.
So what are you left with? A load of 15 year olds with rifles and nowhere to fire them legally. But they will still want to use them won't they. So they end up without any knowledge or respect firing 177's at passing cars.
What a nob end. |

youd be suprised what an air rifle can teach you
My first rifle was a pump up benjamin franklin 342 which i used to go rabbitin with every day. It taught me a lot about shot placement stalking how the wind and distance will affect the shot the use of camo and most important gun safety.
I now have a air arms s200 air gun in .22 which is a precharge and good up to 40yrds.
And a Remington mod700 in 308 cal which is a cracking long range sniping gun and has very little kick.
Most military sniper rifles are designed to have very little recoil to prevent scope creap and to make long range retargeting easyer after a shot.
Go down to a shooting club and ask about what is best for you as picking a rifle for what you want to do is not as easy as just shelf buying.
If you get a air gun you need something your comfortable with and can hold for long periods of time without getting tired.
If you go rimfire or centerfire your gonna need a firearms licence which to get you need a reason to own a gun. And have a secure place to store it in which a firearms officer will come out to inspect.
a good idea would be to get an air rifle and pester the local farmers for land to shoot then apply for a firearms licence using this as a reason. Thats what i did
Once you finally have your gun hitting a stationary target is pointless military targets dont stand still they are unpredictable and can move.
Make yourself a ghillie suit and get out in the fields and learn to wait quietlly. Waiting for bunnys to come your way dressed in full camo it sounds easy but after 30 minutes laying in the rain and mud your arms go numb and you get bored and fidgety.
I once had a group of about 30 scouts sit down and have a rest within 10 meters of me on one shoot. Dident think they would appreciate a grass monster with a gun jumping up so i stayed quiet till they buggered off .
As for shooting in your garden thats a big NO if a pellet richochets into a neighbours yard and they report you its classes as armed tresspass and armed responce WILL be sent out. |

now that was a reply i was looking for
a year ago I told my parents that i was going to make my own ghillie suit they promptly looked at me like a Muppet. but fuck them its my passion and its what i want to do! (i even said this just it still made no sense to them)
now i am going to look into it again and make my own.
Is it strange that the thought of laying in earth in a stripped bush with a gun waiting for a rabbit is something i look forward too.
On the land part a close friend of mine (more her parents) own a lot of land pretty much in the countryside they themselves have an air rifle and shoot it at targets on trees would that pass as land for shooting?
