Right then. This story all starts when my dad gets a 1989 CBR600F off ebay for a small sum of money. He was convinced he was going to make it look good after the guy had started to try and street fighter it. But as usual with him things didn’t get going too well as he was side tracked by his Vmax. Still this meant I got to have a little go up and down his road on it. Which was a blast as all I had a go on before this was my GSX250S.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/agesago.jpg

The ART can on it sounded amazing and gave me goose bumps every time I twisted the throttle. Time went by after that little test ride and I couldn’t get the bike out of my head. I was soon approaching the time to have a go at my A2, after which my dad had promised my this little bike and said he would help me do it up. However it then soon started to go wrong as the bike decided it didn’t want to run any more - so out I go and get an 05 Z750.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/backgroundsmaller.jpg

Over a year later and its my 18th, my brothers buy me a track day voucher… now I don’t mean to seem fussy or anything but there’s no way I’m taking my Z around the track. I’m pretty sure I would bin it. So my dad comes in and says right take this. :O now I’m got the CBR… what the funk am I meant to do? Confused

It has a full ART system, braided lines and hoses - a horrible tail unit and paint job in a horrible shade of red. Not to mention the unspeakably horrible headlight fairing! My god its fugly.

Dad forgot some of the bits - but ive got a Haynes, If you look just above the grip that pink bit of wire is actually a nicely bodged hoke cable.
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/justgotit05.jpg

Braided brake lines
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/justgotit04.jpg

Stainless downpipes leading to the stainless ART can
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/justgotit03.jpg

Nice bit of flakeing paint and rust in there along with some horrible pink anodised footpegs
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/justgotit02.jpg

Someones bodged the dash. Im sure it must have looked okay at some point... maybe.
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/justgotit.jpg

So I soon decide to go down Hal frauds and get some sand paper/primer/satin black/clear.

I sand down all the parts - then sand them again.. And again - you can see where this is going. Prime them and wet sand them to get them nice and smooth. Then started the painting. Which is actually great when you’re not wearing a mask! Shifty

Tank primed after a lot of sanding
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/tankprimed.jpg

tail section primed - it has a crack in it which i didnt think id bother repairing at first
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/tailsectionprimed.jpg

Then i thought why not before i started wet sanding i got out some crack filler and wacked that on it. Sanded it down and it wasnt too bad.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bodgedup.jpg

This pic is just before paint
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/primedandsanded.jpg

After paint -

This is the first coat of black on the tail unit. I thought the choice of satin black was pretty good. Didnt feel like going for that common as muck matte black! Wink
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/1stcoatontail.jpg

This is the fender after some coats of clear - it was like my tester piece thats why it looks so crap.
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/frontfenderpainted.jpg

I got a bit over excited with the clear and made it run a little so i picked up a cloth to wipe it off.. little tip... DONT
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/oops.jpg

Anyway i couldnt be botherd to start that again as im properbly goig to throw this bike down the track anyway. So i fitted the bits on, bare in mind they havnt had gloss put on the (except the fender), i also dont have a seat for it at the moment as my dad hadnt been able to get over. I still couldn’t get over the fact of how damn ugly the headlight fairing looked. I’m not the biggest fan of twin headlights anyway.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/tailandtankpainted02.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/tailandtankpainted.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/tailandtankpainted03.jpg

I then decided to do the clear on the tail section - It went really well until i decided to drop it and all that repair work i had done was gone instantly. Crying or Very sad

I have however managed to bodge it together with some superglue Very Happy

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/Crackedseatcowl.jpg

A couple of days ago my new headlight fairing came through from busters. Very very nice IMO. Especially for the bargin price of £30! And lets be honest i couldnt wait! So off came the twin lights and that horrible piece of fairing and on goes this wonderful piece of sex. (granted i havnt actually wired it up yet as i dont have a soldering iron or anything - but give me time! I just wanted to see what it looked like, and i wasnt dissapointed. Twisted Evil

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/nosefairing05.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/nosefairing02.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/nosefairing03.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/nosefairing04.jpg

After this the belly pan too my eye. Now i couldnt be botherd to start painting it only for the stone etc to wrek it and make the whole lot of work pointless. So i came up with a pretty good solution in my eyes!

Now it isnt actually fixed on properly - ill need to make some brackets up. But this is now close to what i want the bike to look like when im done. Obviously ill need to paint the wheels. Any other suggestions?

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/gaffabellypan.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing06.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing05.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing03.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing02.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/bellypanandnosefairing04.jpg

Thanks for reading! It was a bit long i know! Any suggestions welcomed! But remember its got to be cheap and expendable.

Thumbs Up

I'd get a hugger, fit some lights and get it back on the road myself.

Good rat/stunt bike! Mr. Green

Yea, since you broke the rear end why not look on ebay for a new ear end? I know the subframe as probably been butchered for this end Sick to go on but worth looking into i reckon!

Also, if you get into some spare cash, why not get a nice '89 (or whatever years that model went on for) cbr600f and put the system and other nice bits onto that?

looks a lot better already now though Thumbs Up

I have the part thats been snapped but the whole rear section is a bugger to get hold of. Not to mention very ugly as well. I think im going to stick with this one - even though its fugly, its different, and i kinda like that. Thumbs Up

Im looking into getting a hugger at the moment but right now it really needs to be started! Ive got a marsbar sized plate to go on and also the lights arnt yet on because the tail section still needs some clear put on it.

Thanks for the comments so far. Much appreciated. Smile

Oo i've got a suggestion.

You know those munting footrests you were on about. Get em off Wink

And the belly pan isn't on properly i know but when you fit it properly make sure it's straight. In the side on picture it looks like it's pointing down towards the ground at quite an angle.

As for the wheels. You considered polished rims? Easy as pie to do.

I'd go for some Renthals as well. It'll have a similar feel to the Z then.

Looks pukka so far mate Thumbs Up

Pegs should be getting here ASAP still on order with busters - were meant to arrive when the headlight fairing came! Ive got black anodised tapered ones to be fitted. Mr. Green

How do i do the polished rims? Is it nice and cheap? Im intrigued.(sp?) Thinking

Easy as anything like i said mate.

And yeh nice and cheap.

I'll write this in such a way that i shall assume you'll be spraying the wheels.

Just need a pot of paint stripper and slap it ALL over the wheel to remove any bits of paint that might be flaking on the spokes. Be sure to apply plenty of the stuff to the rims.

The first stage is easy. I don't know if you know how paint stripper works but basically it disolves the paint. So apply it to the rims on both sides and then after about half an hour wipe away the excess. This will leave you with nothing but the nice shiney base metal.

The paint maybe thicker in some places so be sure to check that it's all off and reapply the stripper if nescessary. Also make sure that you go a little bit over the top and apply some stripper to the inside of the wheel otherwise you left with a few bits of paint between the tyre and the rim.

Oh i forgot to mention. Make sure the tyres off! Razz

After that it's just a case of using some polishing toys (Ask Craigs23 what to go for, i'm sure he'll reccomend some AutoSol Wink) to buff up the metal underneath.

Then mask up all your lovely hard elbow grease and paint the wheel.

Easy peasey.

Anything else i can help with?

I guess I'm the only person who actually likes that tail end then? I think with a nice, matching hugger and a stubby it'd be awesome. I like the look of the rear wheel way out like that!
As it happens, it's what I'm thinking of doing to the ZZR too - So, anyone know where I could get ahold of/how to make a tail piece like that?

Not yet, ive only spent about £100 so far and ill probably need to spend about the same to get it through an MOT etc but so far its not breaking the bank and im quite happy with the way things are going. Get paid very soon so ill be buying a couple of other things for it, just dont know what yet! Probably a choke cable and poassibly a hugger. although i might treat the Z to a new exhaust. Cool

Im afraid you are indeed all alone ( Rolling Eyes ) on this one. I dont mind it anymore but i does seem to end quickly. I think If the exhaust was stubby and a bit more angled it may go with it. Thinking

Think im going to try that. Ive got some autosol already - wouldnt use anything else. Wink Cheers for the suggestion mate, will show you how i got on.

Thanks very much for the offer but i dont want to go through all the sanding and painting again. Ive got a replacement side for it but i might just use some filler on it and give it a quick coat. After all this is a bodge job there should be nothing left unscathed. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Cheers again for the interest.

Just a quick update - front and back indicators are now on as well as brake light. Numberplate mount is painted and tank has had its first decent coat of clear... does need one more though. Also got " stickers on it now. they dont stand out much though... they look almost tasteful.

Also on the wheel front ive decided to keep them red for now. Hopefully then i can go find some black rim tape from somewhere although that doesnt look likely.

My mate should be coming round on thursday to help strip and clean the carbs then were going to have a go at firing her up. Should be able to get a nice sound clip from that.

Thumbs Up

Right this is my third time of writing this out as the computer hates me.

Grant came over today to help me with the bike. As im not very mechanicly minded and the carbs needed taking off and cleaning.
We start about 10 in the morning trying to get the carbs off which did take a while to be honest. But in the end with some brute force they finally came off ready for some cleaning.

We drained out some rather luminous looking petrol and then srayed a lot of carb cleaner in and around them to get it all flushed out. We also cleaned the jets and put them back together.

Heres a nice picture of them upside down.
https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02501.jpg

We also cleaned the rubber bikes that we had to detach them from. (i dont know what theryre called) They were encrusted with crustyness?? So some WD40 and elbow grease soon removed that. and they were looking alright again.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02502.jpg

Then we put the carbs back on during which we realised the throttle able is begining to fray... yey more expense!

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02505.jpg

Then came time to put the airbox and filter back on which was pretty straight forward.

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02506.jpg

Then we ventured down to the local texaco garage and got about 3 litres of petrol - although some did manage to spray in my face. Embarassed

Got back to the garage and put the tank on - linked the pipe to it etc and put some petrol in this bint. Turned the key and pressed the starter button....

Nothing Evil or Very Mad

Damn batteries never last. Then we tried it again, the battery had hardly any charge but the engine was turning over so we decide its time for a bump start.

1st attempt the engine just turned over and nothing much happend. Second attempt - not too much really as i forgot to turn the ignition on Embarassed . 3rd time was the same as the first so by now were both pretty tired and decide to go inside and have a bacon sarnie while putting the battery on charge.

Grant decides to use his battery in the bike to see if it would fire up with a bit more electricity flowing through it. Put it in and pressed the button. Unfortunatly it was just more noise. We soon turned our attentions to the fuel pump relay which had been by passed by my with a nice piece of pink wire.

We consulted the haynes on this matter which showed us it had all been done right and should really be working... unless the fuel pump is nakard. Which it turns out it is. The suction on it isnt too bad but the amount of air its pumping out is pitiful. So after all these hours of working i now need to find a new fuel pump for a CBR600FJ... any idea's?

O and the stickers look like this -

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02504.jpg

https://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s34/Torque05/DSC02503.jpg

And try not to step on your tube of copper slip Rolling Eyes

The scratches and dents will say that after the silverstone GP circuit.
