 |
|
I have just upgraded my whole system, including hard drive, after killing my last P.C
Unfortunatly I did not get the opportunity to save all my music and photos to CD's and DVD's before the P.C went bye-bye, so now I have all the stufff on the old HD.
Now, I can access the HD cos I have an extenal case that will accept it, and the new PC can see into it, but it won't (can't) access the 'user' folder, which is where all my photos etc etc are.....!
Being a techno-numpty I don't know how to sort this
Can anyone help? ____________________ You will become my force of retribution. Where you tread, doom will follow. Go now and claim your destiny |

Did you have a password on your account on the old comp? This is most likely why you can't access the files.
2 ways to do this, If you can boot your old hdd up, Just remove any passwords from the user accounts and that should sort it, But since you upgraded i'm guessing the hdd won't boot with the new hardware. (Try booting it in safe mode to remove the password)
OR
I'm not on a windows machine and i'm doing this from memory so you might need to read between the lines if I miss a bit. I've googled the pics so yours might look slightly different
Boot into safe mode (Press F8 a few times before the windows loading screen comes up)
Find the folder you can't access, Right click it and click Sharing and Security.
You should have this:

Click Security then Advanced at the bottom.
You should now have this:
https://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/advanced/backup02_permissions.gif
Select the 'Administrator' account.
Check the 'Replace Permission entries on all.............'
Hit Apply.
I haven't done this in a while so hopefully this helps

Cheers dude, the old safe mode thing worked after I had spent a little bit of patience with it
