Hey All

Quick question, my accelerator cable is a bit stiff and if I twist the throttle handle back it doesn't close back straight away... thinks about it for a bit, slowly closes, then finally goes back to idle position!
I've tried WD40 down the cable from the handle end, didn't make much difference. Have also tried oil in the same way but still doesn't do anything. I've tried following the cable but it disappears under the petrol tank, I 'think' it goes directly into the carb but am not sure and probably wrong Confused . Is there anything else I can do?

Advice please!! Thumbs Up

(P.S Bike is a 2yr old XR125)

I have the same problem with my CG,

make sure the throttle grip spins smoothly with and without the case that holds it to the bars, and that the carb end runs smooth (try moving the accelerator linkage on the side and seeing if it snaps back) If not then order a new cable and whilst its on the way keep it oiled as much as possible.

So I assume I should be able to see the throttle linkage on the carb? Only I've had a look but couldn't see anything moving when twisting the handle, it couldn't be buried inside the carb could it!? Question

Try forcing the throttle closed, if that doesn't work then the problem is either a knackered cable or the throttle slide needs oiling. You can unscrew the top of the carb (about 1 and a half inches wide) where the throttle cable sticks out vertically. Then you should pull the slider out most of the way (about an inch and a half vertically) and lube it up with good old wd40. Thumbs Up

WD40 evaporates and thus will only pose a short-term solution. Better to use a thin smear of dielectric grease... DowCorning DC4...

How about standard oil that you use on push bike chains etc, would that be okay?

ZaphodBeeble, I can close the throttle manually straight away, it's just when you rev up and let go of the throttle it doesn't snap back quickly at all.

I find that grease is a bit too viscous for the slides. WD seems to work ok.

Take the slide out and inspect it for corrosion or signs of wear. Also, check that the spring inside the slide is not broken.

hey all!

Just bringing this old thread back from the dead that I started ages ago!

The accelerator on my bike has been fine after the last episode (see my first post) after oiling the cable regurlarly and checking it.

However it's now started sticking again, only this time oiling the cable and the carb slider makes little difference. The slider and spring are fine, no rust or breaks so I'm assuming I'll need to replace the cable next?

If so, is it easy to replace the carb end of the cable? The handle end I have no problem with, but I'm worried if I take the carb slider out things will go wrong... petrol will spill out, something will fall into the carb etc... any advice on doing this please? Thumbs Up

Also it'd help if anyone could look at the diagram above and tell me what all the numbers point to!

Thanks! Thumbs Up
