When i let the throttle off and the revs drop the bike is fine untill it idles in 2nd and 1st gear...it then starts to pink....when i wind the throttle back on, the bike pinks untill the revs are up above 4000. If i lift the revs up to 4000 by using the clutch then letting the clutch out, the bike is fine.

The bike is idling at 1300 revs which is spot on.

The bike is a ninja zx6r year 2001 and has only covered 4500 miles

Please help

Its not pinking, it wont do it at such low revs then clear out at higher revs.

What makes you think you getting detonation?

Example. I am coming up to a round about i let the throttle off because the car in front has slowed down.....the revs drop to it idling in 2nd gear....the car moves...i put some revs on to go around the round about and BLUR>>>BLUR BLUR>>>BLUR BLUR BLUR then 4000 revs and its then nice and the acceleration becomes nice and smooth

Thats not pinking.

I 'think' a 2001 ZX6 is carb'd isn't it? If so, it sounds more like your pilot jets are blocked, which would explain why it clears around 4k, as that'll be rougly when the mains come into play.

Thumbs Up

Well, if you do it yourself it wont cost you a penny.

You just need to get the carbs off and clean out the pilot jets. Hopefully thats all the problem is, sounds like it to me.

Thumbs Up

That depends how blocked they were. Completely then no, it wont, but if its a slight block of just 1 or 2 of the jets then it would idle (may sound a little lumpy) and then stutter as mentioned above.

Thumbs Up

Yeah

Id be looking elsewhere though. The transition of jets is done by throttle position not revs. If your idle is set up by carb balance and air screw and is still erratic then yes I would imagine jets. But if it is idling well like you say I would imagine it would be something else. I would expect a bike in neutral to show up pilot jet problems just by increasing the revs with no engine load at all which ive seen lots of times. Just have a look at your idle speed when warm and look for it dropping on and off
