https://www.gunson.co.uk/items/pdf/Products/G4053_Instructions.pdf

These are the instructions.

Those instructions DO NOT work on my GS500e for what appears to be two reasons, unless i use an alternative fuel delivery system in place of the tank, i only have limited access to the carbs, and secondly the mixture is simply too lean to even idle.

How can i use this device to sync my carbs?

Any advise would be great as i quite wanna sort the engine downpipe temperature difference problem thingy!

Never seen anything like that before. I would say it's not working because it's crap.

£15 i can afford it to be to be honest!

I reckon, and this is just a theory, by removing that spinny roundy thing and just using the guage and pipe, i can connect it to the vacuum on the carb and get a measurement of the 'good' side of the bike and then try and replicate that figure on the other side.

What you could do is put two vac tubes to a tee-piece then connect it to the device. To test the balance just pinch first one tube then the other to get readings off either carb, and you'll be able to quickly compare readings.

I've got one and used it plenty of times, on a car. Its ok on a bike with pod filters but the amount of effort required to remove the air box just isn't worth it on a bike.

If you want to be cheap just make your own.

hmmm yeah it seems it could actually be a bit too sensetive as when i connected it upto the vacuum it just shot all the way up, obviously that isnt how it was meant to be used but nvm!

I think what im going to do is finally give in to the men in the garages and ask them to do a full service of the bike including carb balancing.

I must admit i adjusted the screw thingy and it did stop the revs sticking at 3k which is good!

dont use the plastic peices just use the tube and plug in into the vacuum plugs, (they are on the top cap part of the carb, under a little rubber bung)
remove the bung, poke on the hose, take a measurement,
do the other side, and adjust accordingly.

that way the air box stays on the bike,
all you need is a temp fuel tank (a small coke bottle with a hole in the lid with a hose poked in)

10 min job max,

hmmmmnz, i did try it that way but the reading just shot straight upto the top of the gauge, however it was pretty steady, if i adjusted the balance at all the reading would go right up but jump from anywhere between 3 and 5 on the scale, yet very quickly.

I think i need a decent balancer...

That's because there is no damper on your device. Most carb balancers have a restrictor in the line to slow down the passage of air to the gauge so that it gives you a reading of average vacuum rather than reading it in real-time, which could damage the dial. You could try putting a restrictor into the tube something like a carb jet, a blockage with a tiny hole in it. That will stop it oscillating, but won't cure the "flying off the top of the gauge"

make some,
i use 2 small bottles, some clear cable a couple of cable ties and some water
works like magic, by far and away the best balancers ever
Very Happy
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/balanncer.jpg

make sure that the water level is less than half the over all volume, so you dont suck water into the carb...
or just fill one side 4/5 full
