I`m going to be changing my bike next year, i need something that will do everything, commute, be MAGNIFICENT fun, very fast, well built and comfortable.

I`m thinking either a CBR1100XX Super Blackbird, or a Kawasaki ZZR1200. A Hayabusa is also on my mind but i'm not convinced about build quality, as the Bandit 1200 i owned rotted quicker than a dead badger locked in a smelting plant in Ghana.

So i need advice from the people who have owned these machines. I`m fairly convinced that one of these three will be my next pride and joy.

fire away!

Ta

EDIT: just to add, my current thoughts are erring on the side of the ZZR1200

Kawasaki.

Fed up of everyone buying blackbirds, soooo unoriginal Shifty

[Edit forgot the advice bit]
Very good little bike the bird, silly speeds, very reliable, not a bad word for it, if you look recently there are a few threads on blackbirds which i've posted in, or in the show and tell bit i have reviewed it here Thumbs Up

Busa build quality is fine mate all alloy frame none of your steel cradle shite Wink I looked at the same options as you are but I just wanted a project with nothing specific in mind and the Busa just happened to come in at the right price.

Personally I think the Blackbird whilst superior to everything else in build quality is let down being dull to look at and showing it's age, I know the Busa's a marmite bike you either love them or hate them but that's one reason why I like them. The ZZR is a Kwak and the feeling I get is they are great bikes but more of an enthuasists machine you need to love them and look after them so it'll love you back.

I reckon in the real world performance is going to be similar unless your going to drag it, so it all comes down to what you want out of it, if you want a comfy mile muncher that will go on for ever then its got to be the honda, if you want a lairy roughian that will need fettling every now and again then the kwak, if you want to split opinion then the busa.

Only you can chose you need to get a ride on them and see which one spanks yer monkey Wink

Im in the same biased boat as Vee. Shifty I havent ridden the zzr1200 or a busa so i know feck all about them other than what i've read (which is that the busa goes well and the zzr1200 is pants).
I've got an injected blackbird thats over 5 years old and it feels newer than my old bike that was barely 2 years old. Laughing It just feels like a quality bit of kit, i can point it down any road and it handles it with ease.
I commute everyday on mine and although its a bit heavy on fuel it handles the task just fine, if your commute involves dual carriageways/motorway your sorted on the bird.
For pillions my missus says the bird is really comfy at the rear. Laughing

Riding the blackbird is like riding some sort of turbine, it just purrs and pulls your face off in any gear at virtually any speed.
Your best bet is to get a test ride on all of them and make your mind up, but i expect your choice will really come down to busa or bird. Wink

Thanks for the info, looks really are not that important to me anymore not with my bikes anyway!

Can't afford a beemer, however the K1200 stirs me inside its not an option. You are probably right about the kwak, i own a ZX6R now and however much i love it, i know its built by drunken quadroplegic chimps.

So i`m down to a Blackbird or Buser. Out of the 2 the Busa has the edge on power and handling, although when you get up to the mid 150's i think power is starting to become irrelevent. I prefer the looks of the busa by a long way, but like i said thats a lesser issue. I need something that i can leave without a wash for a few months and it not melt.

I think this is going to come down to price and age.

Should i be worried about picking up a 20,000 mile 1999 model blackbird? Should i be concerned about the same age Busa?

Cheers, and many thanks for the info so far, i`m storing it all in my little head!

I personally wouldn't worry at that sort of mileage its nothing on a large engine but then I'm handy with the spanners so don't worry too much as one way or another I'd fix it myself. It's the old addage buy the best you can afford and go and try before you buy Wink

Well, i know that many bird owners take their round the clock and then move onto another so 20,000 is hardly anything.

I bought mine with 28000 in very good nick, its now nearly on 33k and laughs in the face of cold weather starts, i regularly take it beyond 150 (on a private road you must understand) and apart from the fact it sinks into a drinking habbit that would put george best to shame no problems, i do tend to thrash it aswell.

In fact i feel sorry for my bikes now Crying or Very sad

Both the 'busa and the 'bird have incredibly strong engines. The 'busa stock engine can easily handle 300hp and the stock crank more than 500hp.

The 'busa has more power and amazing mid-range stomp whereas the 'bird has better build quality more comfort and is cheaper on consumables. Right now there are a lot of used 'busas on the market because of the new model release a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the replies!

After much deliberation i have decided to get a Honda Blackbird, according to statistics at 28, i`m 12 years too young to want one but i do!

It is everything i need, powerful and well built with affordable insurance and a comfortable riding position, and also fast as fuck!

So, any blackbird owners like to tell me what it would feel like in comparison to a ZX6r? I was looking at the stats and its 'only' 138bhp apparently, which seems to put the Hayabusa and all of the current litre sportsbikes a class above power wise. Would it keep up with a litre sportsbike on the straights?

many thanks

Thats at the back wheel.

Tis nice n powerfull, you can say byebye to zx6r's, yes it will keep up with litre bikes on straights.

Was out with a Gix6 once, he said he was redlining it as i flew past....the bird wasnt breaking a sweat...barely 6000 revs Cool

I thought about a ZX12r, but i want something with proven reliability that will see a winter through without melting.

Love Kwaks though, i will miss my ZX6r like mad. for the 35% of the time that i LOVE my kwak, i REALLY love it. but for the rest of the time, it hurts my body.

From what you've said the bird should cover it really. group 16 so insurance isn't murderous, will survive the winter with ease, enough speed and power (its 165bhp @ crank btw) to feed your adrenaline habbit and will shrug off touring/commuting/pillions/sunday blasts/140mph wheelies Thumbs Up

Nothing wrong with the reliability of a ZX12-R. They have a very strong motor.

I understand what your saying Thumbs Up

But i guess "i am not racist" is more applicable! After all, who wants to be stared at in awe on a rainy november night.

The Busa and Zx-12 are amazing machines no doubt, but i need the complete package. i`m sure going from a ZX6R to a Blackbird will be enough of a power hike to scare the pants off me anyway.

if i could have more than one bike, in truth i would have a ZX-10 for posing and a Hornet for commuting. I dont have the space or the money though, so i have to get an everything bike. I reckon i`ve found it. For ages i wanted a GSX1400, but after owning a bandit 1200 for a few months i don`t trust Suzuki build quality anymore.

Anyway, cheers and i will organise a test ride asap and look to pick one up after winter.

Obviously I'm biased, but it is an awesome package. Given that it's an 11 year old bike design and the last major change was in 1999 (and that was only really injection), it's still up there, still high in the Rider Power survey too. I reckon it's testament to how good a design it was in the first place, other bikes have surpassed it, but only in one category at a time, nothing is nearly as complete. The only issue I had was the reach to the bars, at 5'10" I found it was a bit much, but fitting VFR bars fixed that.

It will ruin your life though! I've had mine for a good few years now and I'd love a new bike, having always changed at least every couple of years, but I make my plans and get to the brink of changing but then back out 'cos I can't bring myself to get rid of the 'Bird'.

Ahh well, maybe next winter........ Mr. Green
