Its always best to use the engine as a brake when coming up to traffic lights by coming down the gears. Of course a light touch of the back will warn those behind that your slowing.
Last thing you want to do is stop at lights in 4th and just as they are going to green your fumbling about trying to find 1st.

No, you have to keep the bike running.
And make sure if you do engine brake to only click it into first at the last minuite or the back will lock up. ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

I failed my test this morning on one thing and one thing only, emergancy stop. I came around and as I did it, the back wheel locked up. Did U-Turns and all perfectly well, just cocked up the emergancy stop.
Now locking the back wheel is NOT the end of the world if it comes to that. I was told afterwards that if I would have released the back brake and controlled the bike to a stop I would have passed!
In my test he asked me to ride around the block then come up to an emergancy stop, my mother did her test recently and just admitted she slowed down slightly from 30 to about 23-25mph as she knew it was coming. Then as said above, on with the front brake, then back, clutch at the last moment, then sort out obs and gears and such. Stopping without locking is the key.
On another note, I got two minor marks for gears on my test, stupid mistakes! I pulled up to the roundabout and for reasons I cannot quite fathom, stopped in 3rd. My bike was being a bitch, did NOT want to go down, I got it into 2nd, saw the examiner getting impatient and thought f**k it and set off. Always best to be in 1st or neutral if your stopped!
Anyway I'm going to take the test again... and get it right this time! ____________________ Current Bike: Lifan GY125
