Hi All

I am going to be fitting hella micro DE fog lights to my bike tomorrow.
Just need someone to confirm my wiring.

see below paint diagram...

https://w4.bikepics.com/pics/2008%5C12%5C13%5Cbikepics-1508613-full.jpg

does that look correct?

I want the lights to only be turnonable when the ignition is on hence taking the 12v feed for the relay from the headlights.

thanks a lot,

Rich

You need to put a fuse in the feed between battery and relay as well, just in case. Thumbs Up

Can't remember where I got this piccy from, but it has a bit more detail on the relay and the aforementioned fuseholder Smile

If you take the feed from the headlight you might make the foglights flash on/off if you switch between dip and full beam. Take the feed from the sidelight if you want the foglights to only work if the lights are on or from the feed to the rear break light switch if you want the foglights to work at any time the ignition is on.

You wouldn't need fog lights on with the main beam anyway, also saves the alternator if it is struggling with the extra load. Wink

good point about the high beam thing.
Will wire to the 'position light' as you cant turn that off.
thanks geri

Why do you want fog lights on at all times?

He doesn't, if you look at his wiring diagram there's a switch in it. You're only supposed to display fog light if visibility is less than 100yds. Any other time is risking 3 points.

I`d check that the alternator can kick out enough power before fitting the lights. Otherwise you are gonna cause yourself some major problems if it doesn`t

if they are rear fog lights (red) then just fit led bulbs, the current draw is so low as to not matter ...

if you are fitting driving/fog lights to the front as a pair with 55watt bulbs i'd make them switchable so they aren't on all the time, only when needed to allow your battery time to recover from the start and lighting drain...

also if you haven't already got one i'd get a charger you can plug in at night if you intend to use them all the time...

i fitted an extra pair of lights on my Goldwing (bates with dip/main) fully relayed and fused but also with a switch so they could be turned off to give the battery chance to recover when they weren't needed, put the switch in series with the relay feed so that minimal current is drawn thru it you only want the current going thru the relay(s)

its not the load on the battery I`d be worried about, its the load on the alternator and the OEM wiring from it, you could possible fry the alternator & reg/rec drawing too much load from it, & you don`t want to suddenly find out the wires are overloading, overheating, melting, shorting out, and leaving you stranded, or setting the bike on fire senarios I`m thinking about

Fitting LEDs in all the lights other than the headlights ought to free up sufficient amperage to run a set of fogs quite happily.

The way it's been drawn there is with the new lamps hard-wired to the battery through a relay so the wiring is protected by a fuse.

if the battery is small (unlike a goldwing) the start drain on it can be quite heavy, then running with the foglights on immediately will be giving the alternator no chance (or very little) to catch up and replenish the battery...

that is what i meant in my previous post...

if you're worried about the wiring/alternator catching fire/stranding you then the first thing i'd do is check all charging circuit joints and ensure they're clean and making a good connection ...

bad connections generate heat and put un-necessary stress on wires and charging components...

check the wires from your alternator to the reg/rec, often the plug is overlooked and steadily cooks itself resulting in a fried alternator on older bikes...

as already said elsewhere, feed the foglights via relays and a fuse directly from your battery that will protect older harnesses from excessive load and just switch the relays using the pilot light switch (i'd still include an isolating switch)

When is it ever foggy enough to justify fog lights?

See those ones? They are half blanked off.

If you take the back off them, you'll see a curved metal plate held in with two screws that is blanking off half the reflector.

You can work out the rest...

Rather than fog lights might be worth using the micro driving lights (as seen on chav cars).
Offers a bit more flexibility than just fogs.

Also if you're fitting matching rear fogs then the following regulations come into force...
a) have an illuminated switch or separate tell-tale bulb to warn the operator that the fogs are in operation,
b) be mounted a minimum distance of 100mm from the brake lights, and
c) be no lower than 250mm and no higher than 1000mm from ground level.

It might be worth checking but I think for the front fogs they can be no higher than 1 meter and no lower than 400mm from the road.

Schedule 11 Part 1 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989

Thumbs Up

After that you can also convert them to HID without much grief. Wink
