Clutchless changes

Just read a thread in the workshop and finally decided to start a poll on this,as i often go up the gearbox without the clutch,but use it to come down,also i go from 1st to 2nd with the clutch as doing it clutchless on my bike seems to give it quite a sharp kick and i worry it might be damaging the chain/sprockets etc.I was told on my cbt to kick this habit as i'd fail my bike test,also heard stories about damaging gearboxes but i continue to do it,force of habbit I suppose.Anyone confirm stories of destroying boxes this way?

Sorry there was meant to be a 3rd option but it didn't add it,it was "stop being a cock and use the clutch,every gear,you gain nothing by not using it"

On the road, no, no point at all.

On the track I do, its easier to not use the clutch when you're crouched down.

NEVER EVER clutchless down change, unless you want to ruin your gearbox.

Clutches are cheaper than gearboxes, and when you have a bike that's getting on a bit rebuilding a gearbox would be even more of a ballache because you'd have to source parts from another used machine. Easier it may be, but I'd much sooner knacker my clutch.

Rarely use the clutch for up or down shifts.

Has anyone actually blown a gearbox with clutchless downshifts definitely being the cause (Yamaha riders excluded, we know your gearboxes are crap straight from the crate)?

It depends on my riding.

If I'm bimbling along, I'll use the clutch. If I'm having a bit of a hoon, I won't.

So long as the change is smooth, who really cares? There's no extra load on anything with a smooth change, with or without the clutch.

I've had a clutch cable snap on me before, and knowing I could ride without one was the difference between paying £12 for a clutch cable, or getting breakdown recovery to pick up the bike for me.

i mainly do clutchless when changing up because it gives my hand a rest when constantly changing and on long journeys and it's a piece of piss to do.

Changing down isn't so easy although i managed it without too much grief when i got cramp in my hand after a 150 mile rideout, but don't usually bother when going down.

i always do it, sometimes do it going down too, there's a nack to doing it down the gears though.

Never bother with sequential boxes, i do from 1st to 2nd on the R6 because... well it's an R6.

i use the clutch going down the box on the bike because i find it easier.

in my Karts, i have never used the clutch going up or down the box, and i've never had 1 single problem , engines stripped after every race meeting, never any damage. there is a nack to do it going down the box on a bike but it's no big deal

it's down to personal preference on the road.
