Servicing cost

Just want to compare servicing costs. How much do you pay for:

1 - Minor service (every year)

2 - Major service (every 2 years or whatever)



EDIT: I'm talking if you go to a garage not DIY service

Its just cost of parts for me:

XT600 which I had to service 4 times on the road:

Oil £16 for 3.2 litres
Oil filter £3
Spark plug 1/4 of an iridium £6
Air filter £4
New tyres front and back £35 each.

£20 of oil
£6 oil filter
£10 air filter
£16 spark plugs

Once every blue moon I do the valves which doesn't cost much other than a gasket and some shims just takes lots of time.

Zero. Other than plying my mate with a bottle of wine to help me check clearances and balance the carbs on the GSXR. For the amount I use my bikes it wouldn't be worthwhile having them if I had to pay a stealer for routine servicing. Also a major factor in my liking for simple bikes without water jackets, fuel pumps etc etc.

I never really got the "service" to be honest. I keep up on top of things as they arise. I assume the point is to have the convenience of swapping a load of consumables at one time so downtime is minimised?

I do all my own work anyway so it would just be parts which are of course bike dependent.

When I bought the CB500 four years ago I wasn't sure when certain things had been done, so I paid £227 for a full service, which included valves, carb balancing, a change of brake fluid, coolant, plugs, oil and airfilters. Since then it's been DIY.

The reason I asked is because I phoned up a local Ducati garage (not a dealer, specialist type place) and he said it was about £300 for a minor service! Major is about £400 or £500 which isn't too bad.

I can do the minor service pretty easy, the belts are done every 12,000 miles/2 years so mine isn't due until 2011.

Are belts part of the major service?

I don't do a minor service as such because I change the oil every 2,000 miles (monthly), the oil filter every 6,000 miles (quarterly), and the spark plugs every 7,500 miles and generally keep on top of things as per the service schedule.

I do have a major service once every 15,000 miles which costs around £250 and includes throttle body synchronization, valve clearances and I usually have a courtesy bike overnight.

Just paid southern cross £400 for my latest service; valve checks and FI balancing, lubing of cables etc. Most of it was down to the £50 labour costs. They did a good job since the bike feels balanced and compliant.

Minor services I do myself so that's only for parts.

When I started biking I ended up getting my bike serviced every couple of months (or 1500 - 2000 miles). Half the time it was absolutely free and the other half of the time it cost £25.

Because I rag my bike so much I continue to use a garage to service my bike because there is almost always something else that needs to be repaired at the same time. My bike is now thoroughly abused.

I don't mind doing the oil and filter, plugs etc myself but when it comes to valve clearances etc I prefer to have a garage do that sort of stuff as I don't have the tools or the know how (or basically just don't want to do that shit).

July last year I changed the oil and filter myself but took it to the garage to have fork oil and seals, SH bearings re-greased, cables lubed and MOT all for £111

October I took it to the garage to have valve clearances done and carbs synched, as it was in there though I had the garage change the oil (Silkolene) and filter, clean the K&N air filter (adjusted the chain too without asking and without charging) all for £116

Then I changed the brake fluid when I got home.

That's why I'm doing the major at the garage, 1 because some of the things I don't want to/can't do my self and 2 I wan the stamp. As for the minor service £300 is too much for things that I can do pretty easily using the Haynes Manual

The prices at Moto Rapido are pretty similar to the ones at RC

I probably will never reach those mileage requirements so I plan to do the minor every year and the major/belts every 2 years

i couldn't imagine paying someone else to service my bike.
The way i see it, theres absolutely no harm in having a stab at something and aslong as you have the manual the risk is fairly low of you making a catastrophic mistake, even if you do you have probably saved more than enough to put it right by not taking it to a garage for the last 3 services.

Thats how i see it anyway. I know there are exeptions with some people who just dont get the whole spannering thing and aren't programmed that way, but i think even most of those people would be suprised at how simple small jobs are like; oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, chain tensioning sprockets etc.....

Now is is just me or is that a huge amount?

Never taken a bike in for a service, never plan on doing so. When I do it myself I know a proper job has been done, and I also get an insight into the condition of my bike and how it works.

@rac3r, there are tuition videos of 2V duke servicing on youtube. They're quite simple engines.
