MOD 1 booked for weds, advice

ok finally took the plunge and booked my mod 1 for weds 0830.
i have had no training apart from the CBT but have been practicing a fair bit and using my bike for work.
any advice on what not to do..
also do I.
leave the bike on its side stand while i get on and off it (had a knee op and its still a bit stiff lol) ?
when asked to wheel it backwards into a parking space do i use both hands on the handle bars so i have access to the front brake or just use one to steer and one to balance/push the bike from the seat.
i have watched the members vid from on here and think i have the rest sorted (but ask me again 9am on weds lol)

When I pushed mine I had one hand on the handle bar and one on my backrest. I also got on while it was on the stand and picked it up (assuming you mean a side not centre stand) The main worry is the avoidance and emergency stop because it is best to practise you can reach the required speed. Other than that you should have no probs mate let me know how you get on

General mod 1 advice:

Observations observations observations: Everytime you move off check both shoulders and before you U-turn check all the way behind.

I got some advice before my test regarding the two speed tests which helped me. I was told to stay in second from the corner as too many people lose a few mph when shifting up to 3rd. Most bikes will easily hit the required speed in second gear, so why change? (I did the test twice and had no issues with the speed sections, so that worked for me).

When I pushed the bike I did a big girly 3 point turn. Takes a little longer but I found it easier (I still don't like pushing my bike backwards!).

Yep I did the swerve and emergency in 2nd gear, my instructor insisted that 3rd was the ticket, but you gotta ride how you feel comfortable riding. At the last third of the turn I increased the throttle, and the second I was straight I just rung it's neck for all it was worth, can't remember off the top of my head what my speed was through the trap but it was more than enough, the maneouvere is easy enough, though I'd be reluctant to do it in the wet if I'm honest.

As said, observations at ALL times, this means from the moment you step out of the office after signing your paperwork, to the minute he hands you your pass certificate - I got bollocked for not looking over my shoulders before driving out of the test area after the test had finished (well, the manouveres had finished, but the test isn't officially over until your back in the office).

Don't try and get tight with the figure of eight, go as wide as you like, when I was training I found it pretty difficult sometimes with the allocated space, however once in the test the size of the area was much much larger and it was a piece of piss in comparison.

Just keep your nerves under check and think everything through before you make a move just to check with yourself that you've got it clear in your head, the worst thing I would imagine would be to fail because of a silly little error because you were spending to much time worrying about getting it wrong than concentrating on getting it right!

thanks guys i can do the fig or 8 on a normal width road so i should be ok with that, had my first bump today tho i stopped at a T junction and a bloody car nudged into my rear no plate and wheel knocking the bike over... luckily i just stood up and let the bike go over and only have a broken no plate to show for it...
thinking its a good omen

Is the plate still road legal?
As for the high speed manouvers, I had to go into 3rd for them because my bike only does 30 in 2nd and when iI tried it I just ragged the nuts of it so learned to do it in 3rd depends on your bike really. . .

no the plate has broken into 3 bits, getting a new one tonite (handy being a mechanic)
i'm going to take the satnav out tonite and see how fast she goes in 2nd i'm guessing i need 35 to be safe?

ok satnav recorded 30mph flat in 2nd so i will have to use 3rd, i think you get 2 shots if you are slower but not sure.
replacement chain and sprocket kit was worng when i went to fit it tonite too so thinking its one of those days

yea mate was going to change the sprockets and chain tonite as they are quite worn and i was going up1 and down 1 to get the rpms down a bit at 60mph, mine was an import and has a slightly different sprocket set to the uk bikes maybe to limit top speed to 60mph? as its doing 10K at 60.
think it would have gained me that bit extra in 2nd too lol.
i am actually looking forward to seeing if i can pass now as i love a challenge, just got a 30 mile ride to get to the test station for 0830 then the same back to work which is going to be the biggest pain if i fail it

Always use your head and look around, if your on a 125cc that doesn't like to move much, try to rag out the gears going round the corner into the emergency stops/ avoidence and remember to come down from second into first and bring the clutch in tight so it doesn't stall.

He's looking for you being safe and smooth, so no over harshing on the rear when coming to a stop you want to make it tidy but effective, so no stompies or skids.

Just remember the test starts from when you touch the bike, so do a shoulder check and observe the area in the carpark when moving into the MOD 1 zone.

Got mine (Mod1) on Thursday and now cacking it as its looking like it could be a wet one
Slow speed cone maneuvers not causing me a problem , but the avoidance/emergency stop bit is

Paranoid that I'm going to be too worried about slipping up to make the required speed
I know I /should/ be fine in the dry and given a decent run up the old CG will go fast enough

When its wet for the first time in weeks I ALWAYS assume its going to be slippy out, so ride/drive accordingly
Just don't see the relevance of being forced into riding faster than I would in any real life situation..
Maybe I'm making more of it than it really is and the video's make it look like a fairly short run up/speed trap/maneuver/stop box etc..

I guess I will find out on Thursday

cheers guys been out for a final polish up an i think i may struggle with getting enough speed up but we will see.
i think the drum brakes would be ok if they are well set up as they are more efficiant than disks anyway just harder to maintain etc..
hell i feel more nervous now than i do do before a rally where i could be 100+mph thru a forest

only 2 minors, i left the braking a bit late for after the swerve but still stopped in the box and i ballsed up the U turn slightly by missing the bloody clutch lever and getting a wobble on tyring to stop lol..
