What hmmmnz said! i just did the seals on a ZZ6r exactly that way and they are fine Smile .
dont try to knock them in all in one go Shocked

once i got the old seal out i sanded off a tiny amount off the outside of the old seal so that it was`nt a tight fit.
that way once i had used it to tap in the new seal, it was easy to take it off the fork Smile

Thanks for the tips guys but I would rather use the correct tool, I have spent far too much time and money to maybe mess these forks up.

if you already spent so much money. take it to a shop. they should do it for next to nothing as it takes less than 5 minutes. especially if you have the forks in bits

For USD forks, cut the old seal in half apparently (making sure no metal is sticking out, of course).
That's pretty much what a fork seal driver is.

I wouldn't mind getting a set of seal drivers at some point, but way down on the list as not found the need so far.

I suspect a lot of bike garages don't bother with 'official' drivers either.

I use a bit of drain pipe with a slit taken out of it as a slide hammer for forks - put some kitchen towel inside if you're being extra careful.

When the new seal is pushed up against the housing, tape a piece of A4 paper wrapped tightly around the fork tube so the rubber mallet can slide down against it to tap against half of one of the old seals to knock the new seal into place...easy to do and absolutely no damage to the fork tube Wink

Ensure the bush is forced fully in to the stantion then the seals should go in fairly easily. I use a blunt metal rod and a plastic mallet to knock it in.

I hear what you're saying guys but I would still rather use the correct tool for the job. Think I will just buy one when i next get paid.

Has anyone had any experience with this adjustable one?

Is it good quality? Has anyone got/used one?

I just cut the old seals in half and use them, never thought of them scoring the stanchion either, hmm, normally its just a clean cut and i've never had one come back leaking oil yet, how very odd.
