Building a PC

I dont know much about building a PC, been looking at websites to build your own.

Was wondering here if anyone knows if this is a good spec? Should i make any changes?

Its for gaming, general PC stuff, and proberly some CAD work.

Anyone here good at building them? or even have Windows 7 lurking about

Looking to spend about 900-1K

Also, graphics cards... been out the loop for a while... is the one I have any good? or is it worth Changing? anyone know any good sites for getting components/cheaper companys to build them/Anyone here built a lot?

I'd go for at least a 500gb HDD, or 1 terrabye like this:

Uses 2 500gig platters (effectively two 500 gig hdds working as one)

Also, for the graphics card, id go for a 5870, suits the system far better.

Also, Get a decent heatsink for the CPU and get it over clocked (good o/cing CPU) Something like

Right thats a little bit over budget, but that would be pretty much top of the range (or close to it) Im not expert in AMD so i dont know about that

Chop and change things if you want to lower the budget, e.g. lower graphics card and slightly smaller case would lower it by a few hundred. also shopping around you'll find that you could get some components cheaper!

The only thing with the other sites is that they build it, knowing my luck i will undoubtdly somehow make some static and fry the component

As for the HDD is there any differnce using say 2X250GB instead of 1 500GB?

I will be using a Removabe HDD too

For the money you are talking you could probably get a SSD in there for game files or a boot drive.

Something like the Intel x-25 nice and quick and with windows 7 you would get TRIM support.

looked at newer amd six core cpu's? pretty impressive!

i think a 5770 is alittle bit of a let down considering your goign i7 with a 930... why not got i5 ? or a 850 i7?

as for 500w tr2 powersupply .... id get atleast a 650w corrair etc not so happy with a 500w in that system to be honest altho a tr2 is a good psu id go for somethign with more punch

As for graphics cards is there much differnce between nVidia and ATI?

as far as SSD's go they are uber quick compared to a standard drive for READ speeds, write is still quite slow but for gaming, loading level, and standard apps opening they are incredibly quick.
A single SSD (Intel X-25) is faster than a spinning raid setup.

you do pay a premium just now though.

TRIM support is where the onchip database is "wiped" when an area of the drive is unused because the database is wiped and not the cluster on the drive itself this lengthens the life of the unit and keeps performance up.

There is more to it but that's what you need to know at least.

Windows 7 does this out of the box.
