 |

Hi peeps, I need some advice! I'm looking at trading the Bandit in for something a bit more sporty - I have settled on the CBR over the R6/ZX6R/GSXR for a number of reasons (feel free to mock my reasoning!):
Reliablity
Lower Insurance
Better looking (pre-2000 models at least)
I've got a few questions about the CBR in general, so if anyone has owned or even ridden one before then please enlighten me!!
What is the difference (performance wise) between the carbed and FI models?
What are common problems to look out for?
What sort of age should I be looking at for £2k - £2.5k (I'm guessing pre-2000 for something in decent nick?)
How much difference in performance/handling are they than the Bandit?
I have spotted a few black/yellow 1999 models around the £2200 mark - does that seem reasonable?
If you have any other CBR-related useful info, then please share that too!
Thanks

Check out CBR-forums.
I guess you're just talking about the F rather than the RR, so that's how I'll answer yours questions.
Power from carbed to FI is a very slight increase. The actual engine is unchanged from the 1999 or FX model until they stopped making them in 2005/6.
Common Problems,Cam chain tensioners stick on them. Can be an issue, not always. Listen for the tick. Clutch rumbles in neutral it's not a problem. Reg/recs can fail. Check the centre stand's still there. Second gear can fail, or it'll jump out on bikes that have been heavily wheelied. Standard headers can rust through, but not usually an issue.
See ebay/pistonheads/biketrader, but I suspect around the year 2000 to be fair.
Don't be afraid of bikes with big mileages if they are well cared for they are good for big miles.
F Sport is slightly different, looks the same, but has no centre stand and slightly different engine internals for racing. Possibly slightly different suspension. It's not worth the extra wedge over the standard version on the road.
O, and compared to the bandit, it is faster and more capable, but may not feel it due to the fairing. ____________________ My Flickr |

You should be able to get a 2001 model for that money at this time of year, 2001+ = looks better and has fuel injection...
Not much in it performance wise though between the carb/FI ones tbh, only slight changes although it believe it does make a bit more power and has some clutch and suspension differences.
The bandit is heavier, less powerful has budget suspension and frame components is less aerodynamic and has a non sporty position: quite a lot in terms of performance
Common problems (all from experience ):
The CCT lifter, this will sound like a rattle coming from the right hand side of the engine, prob loudest at some point between 3-6k rpm. It is debatable if it is a serious issue but it sounds gay so you'll want to sort it. New one is £60 and can be fitted by anybody in about 1.5 hrs.
Rusted downpipes - mild steel, enough said
speed sensors are particularly shite - I have no speedo for the 1st 10-15 mins of my ride. I need a new one but £120 for a new one is too big a kick in the balls atm. I am gonna strip it out again and contact cleaner the fuck out of everything but till then... I ride like a granny for the 1st 10 mins
I also had a siezed chain adjuster, had to have a guy with an oxy acetylene torch have at it, more a PITA than anything.
I have heard of reg recs failing and the gearbox is typically honda, not as slick as suzuki but no worse than Yam/Kwak etc
A lot have been binned etc too so look out for the obvious, also these were Hondas flagship sports bikes at the time so a lot will have been raced, keep an eye out for skagged wheels, drilled bolts and pristine bodywork.
The F version is VERY fucking comfy though, rides well, sounds awesome with a baffleless can and goes like stink. For all the problems I've had with it (I bought it VERY cheap i.e. £400 under normal prices) I still fucking love it and would recommend one to anybody! |

Check downpipes! Both my brothers and my own bike - his 1995 and mine 1991 had busted downpipes, I'm in the middle of replacing mine at the moment. Looking at about £120 for a set of new Stainless Steel ones. ____________________ My Project - Honda CBR 600 F2/FM |

I got a superb condition '91 last week for £1k, you should be able to get very last 90's or even a 2000 for that price. ____________________ My Project - Honda CBR 600 F2/FM |

Donny, that looks sweet
I quite like the 1999 colour scheme like this:
https://www.shearwatermotorcycles.com.au/images%20used%20bikes/road/Honda%20CBR600F%201999.JPG
The earlier bikes look a little dated, but that is just my opinion! ____________________ --| Current bike: |--

HEHE cheers,
Thats a nice looking bike mate, everyone knows that yellow is the fastest colour!
For that money I would certainly not expect something older than 1999, there is a black and yellow colour scheme at that age that also looks v nice. (Yes, I am yellow biased ) |

Just been to have a look at a 1999 as above (not the same bike, but same colour ).
It was very comfy to sit on - sporty, but not too much. Unfortunately, it wasn't in great condition - rusted downpipes (cheers for heads-up or I wouldn't have spotted that ), plus some scrapes down one side of the fairing.
It was good, but not for the £1900 asking price. Guess I'll keep looking... ____________________ --| Current bike: |--

There are plenty around mate so keep on looking
TBH though most bikes this age will have a fair amount of rust on the OEM headers. If the bike is sound all over except for the pipes I'd be tempted (I did in fact) to factor in the cost of replacing them (£150 ish) and buy it anyway.
The bit to check is 4 into 2 collector boxes as they seem to rust the most, you can see these if you lie down next to the bike and look about 6 inches back from the tip of the bottom fairings.
If you hear a tapping noise, feel for a leak (will be very hot!). There is little point in welding them so break out the putty for now and be prepared to replace them soonish.
Good luck with yer hunt! |

Having taken it for a nice spin now to get used to it (albeit in the rain ) here are my initial thoughts:
It is much faster than the Bandit, but doesn't really feel it at first because the gear ratios are longer and the fairing keeps the wind off you. I accelerated up to what I thought felt like 60, then noticed 100 on the speedo
Despite the sporty riding position, it is much more comfy than the Bandit - mostly due to the fairing, but also thanks to the seat.
The gear change is suprisingly smooth, but the clutch seems to be more aggressive (making quick starts harder)
The turning circle is bigger, but not by much - it is a 9-point turn in my garage instead of 7-point
All in all, great little bike - looking forward to some good weather so I can really open it up!! ____________________ --| Current bike: |--

It's done about 20k and had a recent service, so that is all good.

Chain & sprockets look fairly new.

Only got one key with it so I'll watch out for that, cheers!

Just had new downpipes put on

I'm used to a Bandit, so this bike feels very light I see what you mean about being top-heavy though, bit of a pain tp move around in the garage ____________________ --| Current bike: |--
