I need a rear tyre.
But I dont have a spare £90 for a new one (+ service charge)

I was looking at part worn tyrs, complete with wheel on ebay.
I asked sellers about the amount of thread left

Complete rear wheel £40 delivered- 5mm thread left

Set of complete wheels £85 delivered - 1.2mm but descirbed as 'lots of thread left', asked him if he ment 12mm, he apologized and said that he ment 12mm.

Rolling Eyes How much thread is on a brand new standard, road bike tyre.

It won't have 12mm tread unless it's a crosser?

Thumbs Up

As above... 12mm... really??

Most new "road" tyres come with about 5-7mm tread.

It was described as 'lots of thread left' I believe 1.2mm isnt road safe, so I suggested him 12mm.
I asked him to take a pic but he never got back to me Mr. Green

My current,perished Sad tyre has 8mm left
https://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products/battlewing/index.html

Will go for 5mm one then Thumbs Up

Hi

That rear is a BT45 I think (decent enough tyres), but looks almost worn out.

Not sure what the front is, but have a vague feeling it is a radial. Radial front and crossply rear combination is illegal.

All the best

Keith

I think its a Macadam. If its a 50 its a Crossply, if its a 100 its raidal.

Is it realy illegal? What is the danger?
What is the difference between these types of tyres?
Can you post some pictures to ilustrate?

Hi

Difference between radial and cross ply tyres is the direction of the internal construction of the tyre.

Best just point you at the radial tyre Wikipedia entry:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radial_tyre

There are also bias belted tyres that are somewhere between the 2.

You can have a radial rear with a radial, bias belted or cross ply front, a bias belted rear with a bias belted or cross ply front, and a cross ply front only with a cross ply front. This is because of the different way they respond to the road in use.

Think the same applies to cars but not sure (not that there are many cross ply car tyres available any more), and you can't mix different types on an axle.

Some bikes have been fitted with a cross ply front and radial rear as standard.

All the best

Keith

So on the outside they look the same? - may have similiar patern ?

Why do you think that the front is radial ?
...(I) have a vague feeling it (front tyre) is a radial.

Hi

From the outside yes they can look the same. The tread pattern has little to do with whether it is cross ply or radial (more to do with styling), and nothing to stop a tyre maker using the same tread pattern on a radial and a cross ply tyre).

As to that tyre, just that tread pattern looks like one I have seen on larger bikes with radial tyres.

I am NOT certain, so check the make / model / rating of that tyre.

All the best

Keith

bt45 is raial tyre too so no problem most moden tyres are radial
you can tell by the size ie 120/70r17 would be a radial tyre "r" indicating radial

Even though DK motorycycles are scum, and DK motorcycles don't deserve the piss from my cat's failing kidneys, they have some cheap maxxis tyres on their website - https://www.dkmotorcycles.com/?product_section=road_bike§ion=shop&product_category=motorcycle_tyres_jis7a&mode=nav_grid

Looks like a front in your size is under £50. If you're really skint then fit it at home, I do for all of my tyres. Lots of washing up liquid is the key. I have also had radials fitted by the local car garage for a fiver a wheel (loose) before.

The BT45 isn't a radial tyre. It is one of the better tyres aimed at bikes designed for cross plies.

All the best

I'm pretty sure the 'r' indicates rear.

find a better place that does tyres.
universal tyres did me a set of bt45's for £150 front and rear including balancing and fitting. took the wheels off and dropped them down there and done it on the spot in about 10minutes

tyre name conventions usually

170/60zr17

170 = width
60 = profile
z = speed rating
r = radial
17 = rim size

the bt-45 is not radial. it is bias

Depends where the R is. Some BT45 tyres are listed as the BT45R which I think is for the ones for the rear wheel. There are also R rated tyres (but pretty uncommon, top speed of 106mph).

Normally a radial it would be something like ZR for a Z speed rated radial tyre.

BT020 is a radial.

forgot to mention that tyre manufacturers usually right and R for 'rear' next to the name of the tyre i.e. where it says bt-45R
