So as per topic title, I'm finding it difficult to get my bike to hange gear properly. I've had problems before with getting a false neutral between 4th and 5th, but i only really does it when clutchless shifting. When it does this, it makes a rather horrible crunching sound too.

The problem I'm having now, is that when I'm going any faster than just crusing at a steady speed, it doesn't want to change up through the gears. 2nd gear, clutch in, throttle closed, firm deliberate movement on the lever all the way up, clutch out. Still in 2nd.

It's weird, through the lever it still feels as though it's snicked into the next gear, but when I let the clutch back out it hasn't gone into the selected gear. Does it mostly 2nd to 3rd, but also does it 3rd to 4th and I think maybe 4th to 5th aswell. No problems 5th to 6th or 1st to 2nd.

I did drop the bike (it's more like i just put it down on it's side tbh) onto the LH side about 3~4 weeks ago, and I've only ridden it a couple of times since then. It has bent the gear lever ever so slightly, but the movement of the lever and all the linkage is still smooth as it should be.

Chain tension seems to be ok, and oil was changed about 4k ago.

It's worse the higher up the revs I go. If I'm just pootling, it's ok.

I'm thinking it's going to be worn / bent selector forks, or worn dog gears? Sad

Get the oil changed, if it's been 4k since the last one it's due anyway.

Mine would do similar on occasion, usually on trackdays. Change of oil always sorted it out.

If it's still being an arse after an oil change, look at droppage-caused issues. But oil's the easiest to check.

Oil change is every 8k iirc?

Worth a shot though, it was done before the winter, and has been sat for about 5 months.

Could try a new gear lever too.

Is your clutch properly adjusted?

I would have thought if the forks were bent/worn dogs it would go in, then jump straight out again.

As per bendy my Hornet was the same. Oil change on those at least every 4k. If not less.
Service intervals should be 4k on that bike.

Pretty sure service intervals are 4k, oil change at each, other stuff spread out.

When accelerating hard and clutchless shifting i find mine sorta jumps outta gear, its nasty. I just stick with the clutch now, but nice to know if its fixable!

Hmm.

Maybe I'm just being a penis.

EDIT:
No, oil is definitely every 8k, so says haynes and the original Honda manual. I will change the oil anyways, as it's the easiest thing to try first.

Oil and filter is 8k as you said, but it is wise to do it every 4k.

Checked the haynes before i read your post Mr. Green

I had a similar problem on both my NC30 and CBR FX and it turned out that where the footpeg goes into the gear lever there wasn't enough grease. When you had your foot on the peg whilst riding change up it would stop the lever from returning down, so I couldn't change up again. Ended up having to give it a small tap to loosed it before being able to change gear. Might be worth having a look?

Make sure the clutch is adjusted properly and the gear shift linkage is correctly lubricated.

check your chain tension my little 400 honda gets nuetral between 1 + 2 if I clutchless change with too much chain slack,

The gear linkage could probably do with a check over too, adjusting the linkage down a few mil might help give a more positive upshift

The linkage and lever are in good condition, and the movement is smooth, but I will take a look none the less. The lever is definitely returning properly.

Chain slack seems ok, but I'll make sure to check it accurately with a ruler rather than doing it by eye.

Cheers for the help guys, it's reassuring at the least Smile
