Hey

I have a GSF600 bandit S faired version, and i had an accident which bent my forks, and so i had the forks replaced with nearly new parts from a breaker. The mechanic said they were in pretty damned good nick.

Now recently, i have been noticing a slight creack every time i break quite hard on the front brake. Is this anything to worry about? Are my forks going to fall out or slip through the yokes? And is it the forks or is it the brakes?

I know these are probably daft questions but i worry!

creak?? if it was more like a knocking sound/feel id say are the steering bearings to tight/loose? is each fork the same hight as the other? check front pads for equal wear to, hope this helps

Are you sure it's the forks that are creaking? Could it not be the fairing is rubbing somewhere when the forks are compressed?

Does the creaking occur if you push down on the forks hard with the front brake on? i.e. not just when you are riding. How about if you press the brake whilst pushing it forward?

If it does, try and see if it is coming from the headstock, the brakes, forks etc.

Most likely the brakes creaking.
Could be a hose chaffing in the fairing or through an eye though.
Have a look see of the brake hose(s) & Speedo cable are all in thier guides, and check gromets.
If you have braided hose, its narrower than stock rubber hose, and some guides have grommets that grip the std hose. Put on a braided, the gromet dont grip & the hose chaffs, & being braided steel, wears through the rubber.... grommet pops, and they you get grating noise as braided steel rubs on guide!
More likely accumulated brake dist on caliper float-pins, though, and or in & around the pads.
Wip out the pads, clean, coppa-slip, put'em back.
If that dont cure it, wip the calipers off, pill the calipers off the float-pins, clean, coppa-slip, re-assemble, see if that works.
Another one is the mudguard.... check the mounting bolts... if loose, can twist or shift under braking & give rubbing / grating noises, esp if the brake hose or speedo cable have guides clipped to it to help make it move when the forks compress.
Basically, poke-prod, scratch head, bounce, twist, tug, looking for something a bit wiered or unusual, and a little preventative maintenence, should sort it out.

Have you recently replaced the brake pads?

Maybe lack of oil in the forks??

Right, Now pushing down on the fron forks doesnt make a noise when sationary, but it does make the creak when i roll the bike forward and brake hard. So i'm asuming its the brakes/calipers. Now i have replaced the front pads recently, and I have goodridge braided hoses. They all seem to tuck in okay and whatnot.

THe front fender was crashed, so there are little starburst cracks on the hole the mounting bolts fit through.

Thats as far as my analysis has gone! Any ideas?

Have you tried spraying some brake cleaner into the floating rivets? When they get gobbed up it causes the discs to squeal & grind sometimes. Make sure you wipe the discs well afterwards. Smile

Check the headstock bearings and also check the welds around thw headstock for signs of cracking.

And while you're at it check your top and bottom yokes for cracks (I've had a top steel one crack !)
