morning

ok i have a 1995

honda vfr750

for the last three years i always noticed a slight mechanical 'granchy' noice when the startermotor engaged... just before it started.

however. this weekend.. what ever it was has decided to break

when you hit the start button, soound of something like to gears just catching eacother but stopping then being left with the sound of an electric motor spinning mindlessly.

has anyone come acros this before?

if its anything like the statermotors on my jeeps, the spring on the gear has given up....

so im hoping i can have the motor mech replaced.

any help, suggestions would be helpful

thanks guys. and girls.

Sounds like the starter clutch is gone tits up, parts of the rotor on the side of the engine, 3 rollers grip the crank, have been known to get flat spots and then the wont grip, they are available via "dave silver spares" probably.

What Odie said. Or possibly a broken spring under one of the rollers. They usually go intermittant before failing altogether.

It's under the clutch cover. Not a big job to do. Once the oil's drained and the cover is off, jam a bit of stout cloth (folded over bit or denim or similar) into the gears to lock the starter clutch and clutch gears so you can undo the centre nut without it all turning.

You sometimes find bumping it slightly backwards in gear turn things enough for it to catch next time.
