On the topic of rust proofing before painting. Ok you've just sanded/cleaned/brushed the rust back to the steel.

Some people say its enough to just put zinc primer on bare steel others say you always need acid etching on bare metal, no question.

I'm stuck between the two, anyone able to shed some light?

Good call thanks wonder how it compares to Isopon David's Zinc 182.

It is a paint however so don't know how well paint adheres to it and I was after a Primer or acid etching

not a clue, but we use it at work if someone want something galvanising, but cant wait, plus you dont have to use morden solution to make it dull

Personally my least favoured method (although without justice as I've never tried it).

Having read up about it I know Galvafroid is good but it is overkill for me at the moment as its very expensive.

I was under the impression etch primer (Por or whatever) was used more for aluminium and that its pointless overcoating it with zinc primer afterwards.

I've heard Bondaprimer + zinc is good.

So I'm still in two minds and no further concerning which priming treatment is good.

As no one seems to have any idea bcf here is some more, this is the recommendation on every single acid etch primer I've found:

Quote:

Compatibility/Substrates

For use on Aluminium/Alloy, Zinc-sprayed Surfaces and Lead.

note not for bare steel surfaces and

Quote:

ALUMINIUM:
Above water:: Clean and degrease with Yacht Line Super Cleaner. For better adhesion, mechanically abrade using aluminium compatible paper or low pressure grit blast using aluminium oxide.
Below water:: Clean and degrease with Yacht Line Super Cleaner. Mechanically abrade using aluminium compatible paper or low pressure grit blast using aluminium oxide.

ZINC/GALVANISED STEEL: Degrease with Yacht Line Super Cleaner.

LEAD: Rub down with an emery cloth or power wire brush. Degrease with Yacht Line Super Cleaner.

Nowhere does it say you should/can apply it to steel without a zinc coat.

I'm trying to remember all the highly technical stuff I was taught when learning the "Corrosion" module of my apprenticeship a million years ago....

I think we were taught you don't use Jenolite (IIRC Acid Etch Primer) on high tensile steel as it causes Hydrogen Embrittlement.

That could all be rubbish though. It was rather a dry subject, and I was drinking a lot that week.
