Added complexity for what benefit? Also combustion area shape doesn't look too efficient.

very similar to the bear head, but using pistons instead of sliding ports,
as for complexity its no more complex than 4 valves a cam and rocker arms,
less complex if anything

Instead of all that you now have twice as many cranks, 3 times as many big end bearings, 3 times as many piston rings potentially giving 3 times the oil loss with 3 times as many cylinders that can become oval.
Surely it only acheives the same ting as a split single but with aditional complexity?

i didnt say it was a good idea, but its relitivly simple,
not as simple as the bear head though

That looks just as inefficient as the one above. If you watch the rotation of the main crank, just at the point it will be creating peak torque, the smaller (right-hand) piston is moving away, increasing the volume of the combustion chamber. Confused

Yeh, massive fail there. Unless the cranks are linked (obviously through some reduction gear).

It explains how it works but focuses on energy required to open the valves. That's just one part of how efficient an engine is. How about the 'blow-past' of the additional cylinder, additional weight and rotational masses and as mentioned the changing size/shape of the combustion chamber.
And with bikes, that design makes the engine taller, adding mass high up in the frame exactly where you don't want it.

Great idea, but flawed. I'd like to see one put on a dyno and compared to a 'traditional' design. It just doesn't add up to me but I'd be happy to be wrong!

UUUmmm... Your right of course,How about the Grail engine??? They have devloped a new 2 stroke engine that is enviromentally friendly, can run on almost any fuel, and weighs next to nothing. I belive the 100hp motor has 1 cylinder, and weighs less than 75 lbs....imagine the possibilities.

* 180 ft lbs Torque

no its not,
the bearehead motor was a simple overhead motor that has the valve train replaced with a single sliding port operated via the original cam chain/belt, he had it running on a ducati and a dr650, it had a load more torque than standard, on a vid i saw of the dr650, the had it against a wall, and dropped the clutch at idle it would just sit there and wheel spin,

unfortuanatly someone managed to buy the patents from mr beare and shut down his site etc etc and that was the end of that,
