I've taken a few risks in my life. I helped to start up booby trapped machinery in Croatia. I've driven a Veyron at over 200mph. I rode a BMW S1000RR on the Autobhan at night in the rain. I've been shot, stabbed, and electrocuted. The list carries on and despite this I've learnt nothing.
Today I brought The Artists (formerly known as Allymoss) old GS125.
I was warned by others and even Ally pointed out that it needed work but it didn't stop me. Even common sense took a nose dive and I made the decision to ride it the 25 miles back home with no tax or MOT.
It started well, being old and boring meant that insurance was free. A quick call to a friendly garage and it was 'booked' in for a MOT just in case. Roads were wet but the sun was shining so with stout shoes and prevailing optimism we left to pick it up.
I struggled to find Mossys house and I should have taken that as a sign of impending doom, even my initial attempts at contact resulted in voicemail. Unfortunately just as I was preparing to abandon the quest he called back.
Blah, blah, blah. All done and dusted and off I go with a list of known problems.
No speedo or Tacho.
Exhaust bracket broken.
No indicators.
Oil leak.
Fork seals knackered.
Erratic tickover.
Riding the bike revealed other issues.
Steering wasn't straight.
Handling was 'interesting'.
Brakes were classic 80's, they did nothing above 5mph.
Mirror tended to get bored and look at the sky.
Engine was very rattlely.
Nothing major and I arrived at my house in mainly one piece.
Let the photos speak for themselves. Sorry for the quality, the fear was still running through me when I took them.

Nice welding.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10566.jpg
Chain might need adjusting. There is as much movement sideways as there is up and down.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10565.jpg
Bit of an oil leak.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10562.jpg
Throttle cable went for the minimalist route.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10563.jpg
Man oh man, this is just the start. The more I looked the worse it got, so I stopped looking.
Additions to the list.
Exhaust has a big hole in it.
choke lever missing.
Blow up tyres, pressure was 17psi front and 13psi rear
Warning lights don't work.
Brake light is permanently on. Front switch doesn't work.
Lots of loose or mismatched fixings. 6mm into 8mm doesn't go.
Headlight is loose and points were it likes.
NO OIL IN ENGINE
etc etc.
This sort of sums it up for me.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10567.jpg
Not obvious on first looks but the speedo cable is attached to the tacho.
I've spent an hour on it and given it a good clean, topped up the oil and started pulling it apart. Oil leak has been located and many new parts on order. Speedo and tacho are working, brake light fixed, and tickover sorted. Give it time and it'll be fine. |

you forgot:
exhaust was run over by a merc.
throttle cable has right angle in it half way along.
the brake light flickers like a candle as you ride along.
on the plus side, the nearside pillion peg is a special 'gravity locating' item it will always point towards the centre of the earth... handy for something im sure.
and at least no one will ever nick it!! ____________________ Turbocharged drag thing / project death weapon / GK73A

I would be working under the assumption that every single bearing and seal was knackered and see about buying a full set from somewhere. Drum brakes were old hat even back in the 80's though they can very very cheap to fix, also quite expensive
Cosmetically it's a dog, but provided everything that would move does, everything else doesn't and nothings leaking it will be good for a fair bit. |

Not much done, just started stripping down.
https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/GS125/SDC10575.jpg
List of fail keeps growing, rear sprocket was loose, wheel bearings need changing, tank rubbers are missing, best so far is the rear 18" wheel is fitted with a 17" tyre.
I need to find a manual. |

I think the only nice bit is the self amalgamating tape on the electrics, courtesy of moi. ____________________ Turbocharged drag thing / project death weapon / GK73A

As said above, if you want cosmetics etc, the bike will quickly become a money pit as you'll never get it back in resale value. But if you want a cheap run around, getting to mechanically sorted doesn't cost much if you do it all yourself. At least if it still looks like a dog, no one will nick it |

If he's got a good job in automotive whatever it was, I'm guessing he can afford to spend a bit of money on a hobby.
