If your visor replacement mechanism is straightforward it is no issue to swap between visors. I had an old AGV with fairly easy-to-use visor mechanism, although my current Shoei is easier.
TL;DR - a dark visor will be fine. |

I've been using not for road use black visors since I started riding. Never been pulled for it.
IMO if you're riding around at night with a dark visor you deserve to get pulled. ____________________ My Flickr |

Thanks for all your replies
I'll always carry a clear visor with me anyway so there shouldnt be an issue. |

I got a hyper optiks fog city insert for my shark lid, and converted it to pinlock when i got my shoei. The tint changes colour, but it doesnt darken enough to give an even luminesence when you go from dark to bright.
I've got to agree that a tinted insert isnt as good as the full visor, because the tint doesnt cover the full area, and depending on your riding position (how head down arse up you are) it can get in the way a bit. That said, it is easier to carry an insert rather than another visor. ____________________ '82 C50, '81 CB100, '84 GS125, '95 NTV650, '00 Bandit 600, '06 SV650, '56 Z1000, '89 NTV600

"Not for road use" or "Daytime use only" is irrelevant on visors. Unlike for exhausts, it has no meaning in law. What matters is that the visor has a BS4110 or E mark. No mark, illegal. Mark, legal.
I've noted a few times that there's no obvious way to verify whether a marked item actually does meet the required standard. My visor has a stuck on E13 label, so it was ostensibly tested in Luxembourg. How on earth would I check? And why should I? The presence of the mark is what matters as far as the law is concerned.
Incidentally, the label is peeling - the moment that it comes off, the visor becomes illegal. So to keep on the right side of the law, I should make up another one and stick it on, right?
So here's what you do. Buy any visor you like, look the other way while a Glamorous Assistant slaps an "E" sticker on it, and you're every bit as legal as anyone else wearing any E marked visor, regardless of tint or "you gonna die, sucka" marking on it.
Yes, if it's over 50% tint then it shouldn't be E marked, but that's not your problem, is it? Came that way, right? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Tinted visors are brilliant! My Caberg flip helmet has an internal one that you can pull down. Pretty swish. ____________________ CBT Passed - 22 / 10 / 11 >> Theory Passed - 16 / 02 / 2012 >> Mod 1 Passed - 07 / 03 / 2012 >> Mod 2 Passed - 18 / 05 / 2012. |

I always wear backed out visor, if I get caught out in the dark with it then I just ride around with visor open but normally I carry clear visor on me just in case. I'm still fairly new to riding, so if I do something stupid like stall the bike or almost drop it then I can hide behind the dark visor |

What has always interested me is those mirror'd visors... you know the ones you get that are reflective from the outside, usually in a yellow or purple colour... do they do the same job as the tinted visors?

As mentioned above, my visor is marked "E13", with a (not very) sticky label. Now, I have an interest in the minutiae of legislation, but I have no idea if it actually "meets levels of safety, suitability and fitness for purpose equivalent to those offered by [BS 4110]". What chance does a random traffic copper have, or one of the CPS's finest clock-watchers?
In practice, I'd suggest that having a helmet sporting a mark is a pretty good defence. It doesn't meed DS 4110 or 89/686/EEC (as amended), you say? You'd have to take that up with the seller, or Luxembourg, or Brussels.. No, I can't remember where I bought it, it was some guy on eBay years ago. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

You are right to a point.
To be legal in the UK, it has to be of an equivelant standard and therefore capable of passing the 4110 test.
Although approved for use in most EU countries, it is one of those areas where because the level of tint does not conform to UK standards, despite being marked with EU markings, 4110 is still the base setting for legality.
However, if the visor is worn in appropriate conditions, it is unlikely to affect anything as the same principal applies as wearing an 18% visor, and the big issue is that retailers are not allowed to sell visors other than those stamped with 4110 unless they are happy to pay massive fines, the last one being up north who got stung for about £50,000 and went out of business.
With helmets brought in from overseas it is somewhat different as most of the branded hats would if tested meet the standard, but the current EC22/05 is europe wide and those brought in from the USA with either a Snell or DOT approval would reasonably be expected to meet the 6658-85 or EC22/05 standard.
Visors are different because different manufacturers have different manufacturing techniques and optical clarity and colour recognition is a major issue which is ne of the key points raised when as members of the BSI committee we tried to get the use of 18% black visors legalised for daytime use a few years back. ____________________ It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world, than 30 years early in the next |
