Let the awesome commence!

Dont really know how this going to pan yet as it is obviously very early days however it is my hope that I can get it running reasonably and get it road legal once again. Will worry about any minor cosmetic issues it may have after that stage is complete Laughing

Day one - Stage one - liberally douse whole bike with all WD40 left in my shed.
Discovered battery looks half empty but hoping it might charge up after a top up. Discovered choke lever and cable in a plastic bag so that probably wont aid starting. Shock appears to be predominantly rust, same with chain although hoping that will scrub up for the meantime.

i do miss that bike sometimes, until it gets round to finding parts. you should be glad to know that when i had that (before muzza and after dave hogg) i refurbished the brakes with new seals etc. took about 4 weeks for seals to be sent over from japan.

might be a few random stuff lying in my garage that might fit onto the bike. I bought a few things to fix it up with that i never got round to doing. Also the fuses are house fuses not blade ones, took me ages to find them.

Coils discovered to be rotten. Replacement set bought off ebay, tested tonight so now has a functioning ignition system.

Fuel in the tank was a nice muddy/watery brown - all drained out now but still needs a good flush around. Hoping to not have to strip and clean the carbs for the meantime but if needs must. Would like to see at least some sign of life first.

Parts from other Yamaha's of this vintage may well fit. I know ive got a few bits from other Yams on my TRX. So dont go looking for just 250 bits.

What length is the shock? I have a few ive been using to test fit into my TRX.

AFAIK If the exhaust it rotten you will not be able to buy a new one off of the shelf and used ones are extremely rare (in good nick).

Cheers for looking. Noticed the plug wells full of water when i first started tinkering.

Havent gotten very far with it yet. Got the replacement coils tested but then one of the leads fell out! Replaced that with one of the old ones and got it turning over for a good while with fresh clean fuel but it wasnt just for firing into life. There was a the most minute change in tone now and again which gave at least a glimmer of hope but gonna need some further investigation yet. Had hoped for at least a bit of a cough and splutter. Am gonna try again with a good dose of easy start before i pull the carbs off.

Its runs! Very Happy

All it wanted was a good lung full of easy start and it was off. Idling pretty high and was only going for a couple of mins as the radiator is in the shed but progress none the less. Happy days!

Fire some fuel down the carb - not too much though - and run it then see if the pipe is getting warm. If it is you need to sort the carbs, though from the sounds of things you need to do that anyway.

She's mine now, needs a bit of work right enough, but i will get there....

So far have serviced the forks, rebuilt the subframe, removed engine, added a rear hugger, moved the bars above the yokes, stripped the tank, fitted a new seat unit, replaced rear shock...

Plenty more to do, biggest concern is the swiss cheese header pipes, but looking at getting some 32mm stainless and hiring a pipe bender..

Ditched the exup valve, gonna keep it simple even if it means a loss of torque (like it has any anyway)....

Ps - i never chopped the subframe or dropped the clipons. The dude it sold it too did that, initiated a clever marketing strategy rebranding it as a "cafe racer project" then sold it for near twice what i gave it to him for!

turned into a typical "street fighter"

also would it not be better as you have used a mito seat unit, integrate the rear lights into the fairing instead of being bodged on underneath?

I would say that the seat unit follows the right lines for the bike, the lights look fine to me too. Also keeping the rear mudguard/numberplate section is hardly "typical streetfighter"

I think what has been done so far looks pretty neat and is certainly an improvement on how i last saw it!

I did consider something like a mito seat unit, however most bike seat units come in various parts and I preferred to get a single piece seat unit for strength and simplicity.

As the bike was bought dirt cheap I am trying hard not to spend huge amounts of money on it as its never going to be worth a huge amount....turds and polishing spring to mind...

To that end sourcing suitable parts cheaply is my main aim, and since it came with no fairing the street fighter look is a no brainer!

If I had thousands to spend on a bike, I am pretty certain that I would not have chosen this bike... Likewise had quotes for respraying were for more than i paid for it...

I will be happy once its tidy and mechanically sound ta very much!

A big part for me is the tinkering and fixing (bodging if you like) and making use of the bits i have (rear lights/guard,etc)

Cheers Darth, hunting for seat units on ebay and trying to imagine them on your bike is a bit of a lottery but have to say i am happy with this one, it's not the only one i bid on but its the one i won....happy days!

davehog-> Me -> muzza-> darth -> Ando

going through a lot of ppl now, i think i was the 4th from bcf.

Parts were a pain, had to redo the entire brakes and weld up the exhaust as it spat out flames are random points. Glad to see works being done on it. Ironically I now have a job thats decent pay and lots of free time so tempted to get a new project bike that i can finish
