 |
|
Well the front forks on my 750SS are buggered, appears the damping tubes or something or other has gone in them, either that or the O rings at the top of whaddyamacallits have gone.
So I was looking around for some 900SS forks as these are slightly better than the ones I currently have, and the only pairs I found were either bent beyond recognition or sold (btw if you're the company I rang up about a week ago about the 900SS forks that you had for sale on ebay but turned out they were sold, thanks for calling me back, I enjoyed the 4 hour wait before I rang back. )
So I have gone for the next alternative which is a SBK conversion, quite a few in America have done this, not sure if anyone in the UK has but I now have a set of these
https://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/pitslayer/IMG_20120412_105650.jpg
https://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/pitslayer/IMG_20120412_105749.jpg
999 adjustable preload forks £150
Now there is some modifying that needs doing to make these fit my bike, my bike uses a 50mm top yoke and 53mm bottom, the 999 forks are 53mm top 53mm bottom.
So the plan is to dismantle the front end, top tree off and taken to a machine shop to get it bored out to 53mm
Bottom will stay on as it doesn't need to come off, but I do need to create a 53/54mm top hat spacer just to make sure they grip the fork tubes.
Only part I am really struggling with is brake spacers, I need 5mm width aluminium washers essentially with an m10 hole through it, as the brakes on the 999 are 5 m offset compared to mine, I have contacted a company in America who sell these for gokarts but they are utterly fucking useless
$15 worth of parts and want $173 shipping, emailed asking about normal postage, no reply since the 6th, waste of space so far.
will try to remember to keep this updated. ____________________ Stinkwheel: You have no right to free speech

Well I now have a set of Ducati 999 Clip ons and I also have a hard steely rod.

(is aware that is not a rod, however I do have a hard rod on its way to me)
Time to get the shims made up ____________________ Stinkwheel: You have no right to free speech

I looked into doing this mod to my Monster, but i found some fully adjustable Showas from an 888.
Good luck with it, let us know how it handles when its done.

Have you got any pictures of your Ducati?
I have had my 750ss for a year now and am going to spend some money on it this summer to get it up to scratch |

Lovely looking bike!
I was debating changing mine this year but cannot think of anything for the price that offers better looks / noise / economy so will keep it for a while yet
It needs:
-Alternator case repainting (do you know where you can buy original paint?)
-New head bearings
-One of the fork seals is starting to weep slightly
-Chain and sprockets
-Repair and repaint the RHS plastics
-A damn good clean up
I will probably start my own thread when the bits get all delivered and i start the work.

Cheers
I was going to sell mine, but to be honest it is fantastic bike and unless I go for spending lots more cash, it will do the job.
-Alternator case repainting (do you know where you can buy original paint?) Some companies sell the paint for the frame and fairings, but not sure on the alternator cover, you might be best off going to a paint supplies place and asking for some silver colour charts and getting a match on the chart.
-New head bearings- Something I am going to check on mine, though they can be adjusted with grease, a hammer and punch I believe ( don't take word for it)
-One of the fork seals is starting to weep slightly- matter of course really, depends which way you want to go, I had thinner I think oil put in mine, or I was running 10w and it got put to 5w and honestly the transformation was night and day, the front was a bag of shit afterwards, so if you're happy stick with that weight of oil
-Chain and sprockets- Just done mine now, get a decent set you need to remove clutch thingy to take the front sprocket off, but really simple job to be fair, make sure you put the conical shape washer on rear tyre right way around or your rear wheel wont fit back on, easily done.
-Repair and repaint the RHS plastics- and LHS fairings, and rest of the bike, you appear to have bought the wrong colour one my right hand one on mine needs painting as well, but will see, problem with me is that it will end up like some of the cars I have had, especially my VR4 where I got it to such a standard of cleanliness and what not I loathed taking it out incase it got marked, so the Duke gets ridden most of the year around (was even out in snow) and I don't want to get the fairing repainted as then I would need to sort out all the other little niggles I have paint work wise, then back to VR4, no longer want to go out on it, far too anal.
-A damn good clean up- This is a pain staking task, honest advice to you, buy front and rear paddock stand, you should at least have a rear one anyway as Dukes, especially the SS, do not like sitting on the floor all the time with no weight on them, as the rear shocks do tend to lock up, which means if you ever need to adjust your rear shock you need to take it off put in a vice and hit the collars around with a hammer, lots of WD40.
With it up on the stand you can really get in and clean it, only pics I really have

https://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/pitslayer/Duke/IMG_20110429_093149.jpg
I personally like to get the fairings off, and use a soft brush and an some water based engine degreaser to clean all the engine etc up, you have the advantage and disadvantage of not having the lower fairings, they are bugger to keep clean internally, but at the same time they show up any leaks you may get
That said, she does get used
https://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/pitslayer/Duke/IMG_20120311_131527.jpg
If you can, get a set of these, very rare to get hold of though.

Think I have read that thread already, the tins are very hard to get hold of, as is the ECU, though I have heard the ECU is bit something of nothing if not used with the tins (the ones I have) but if you're going to fit it make sure you take it somewhere for it to be set up before fitting it to make sure it isn't running lean etc and can be adjust on the rolling road.
As for a forum, I joined Ducatisti then lost interest as frankly it was a load of shit, rarely much going on, very little technical stuff, one guy whop posts all the time but clearly has lost the will to live with his posts even though helpful, but comes across as a bit of a cock, then the whole "wah wah wah no time to do forum, close it down or sell it" debacle, after that I quite frankly couldn't care for the forum.
https://www.ducati.ms/forums/ on the other hand, whilst full of yankee doodles, and you have to be hard ghey and post a hello thread before you're let in, is very helpful, everyone seems to know their stuff and the Supersport section is much more active as the bike seems to have more of a following over there.

Right, well so far it is all go.
Got the bike up in the air, I would do a step by step guide but I cba and there are a fair few out there already.
Really though it is straight forward
Fairings off
Spindle undone
Brakes undone
Bottom bolts on forks undone
Lower triple bolts on forks undone
Top triple bolts undone
Stem nut undone (need a special tool for this)
Clip ons removed
bit of WD40 around the fork triple clamps and slide them out
Then bounce them on the floor and go "what the hell? These did nothing on the bike, they wouldn't go down, they wouldn't go up, they were just rock solid now they move freely, great I have a buggered bike *pick up fork leg to hear gluglugluglugluglugluglug *10 seconds later glug..glug..glug...glug* Well I am not a DR, and I don't know much about forks, but I am pretty sure they shouldn't do that"
This is how it sits at the moment, everything is at the machine shop now
