Ok so I`m finally getting round to doing the float heights on my XS 400, Yipee! at fecking last Embarassed

According to the Haynes manual for that bike, the float height is 32.0 + 1mm give or take?
So if i`m still running a bit rich ie starts easy without choke, wont tick over, revs fine Thumbs Up , you can smell it in the exhaust smoke.
What next? I have the right jets in and the needles are in the right notch. Confused
I dont/did`nt have any air-leaks and am using a standard air-box.
also the floats are in good order, as is the float needle assembly.

I seek your wisdom BCF?

thank you Thumbs Up

Only just come across this question while looking for something else,so apologies for not answering sooner.

32mm does seem a bit big,but Haynes get their info from the manufacturers,so it should be correct.

Are both set at 32mm?

If one is higher ie.31mm,is that spark plug for that cylinder showing as running too rich?

What does the other one show?Tan colour is good.

What happens if you set the float heights to 33mm?

Is the ignition working properly as insufficient spark could cause the air/fuel mix to not completely burn.

Are the spark plugs in good condition?Are they set at the optimum gap?A smaller gap should make the plug fire easier.

Is the air filter clean?

Is the air screw set to the manuals specification?Usually about 1.5 turns out but this is machine specific.Is the very small spring,washer and 'O' ring in place on each air screw?

Have you checked that the float chamber vent airways are passing air okay?

Thank you for that Thumbs Up much info to digest.

Plugs, timing, sparks, battery = all good.
Small spring and o-ring in place = yes.
Airbox = airtight.
Airfilter = clean.

I will read your thread again when I have the bike in bits again Thumbs Up

I'd go with the mixture screw.

Also, you could check your diaphragms. A fine crack in a fold could cause the needle to move up more slowly, which would effectively richen the mixture.

I just saw this too.

Why would your float heights have changed since the bike was last running properly.

If you can come up with a convincing answer, then fiddle with them. Otherwise leave them alone. As a general rule, floats heights don't/can't change themselves (with the exception of a punctured float).
